Default s2000 Cylinder Wall Coating,(F20C) Woes, Need Experienced Help.

So my s2000 is at my favorite machine shop and they told me that my #4 is out of round and will need to be bored. They were telling me however- The coating will be taken off, And that its intended with that coating.

When I look at honda service Limits, they say the engine is allowed to be bored, They even sell a .025 Oversized piston.
I talked with earl and we were wanting to know if the whole cylinder is coated or if its just the surface?

My machinist thinks it will eat the cylinder wall up without the coating.

Someone out here has had to of done a stock or possibly a buildup requiring a bore that could tell me if im good to go ahead and do the work or not.

Im just trying to do a stock rebuild to get the car running reliabliy

I've got your answers.

The S2000's (and Prelude's) cylinder walls are made out of FRM, or fiber reinforced metal instead of the usual iron. It is not a coating, that is the material it is made of. There is no way to take it off. FRM is supposed to reduce friction and improve the life of the engine. FRM is also the reason that most aftermarket pistons will not work on that engine. The engine will need to be sleeved with iron in order to work, but that's getting off topic.

You CAN bore FRM sleeves out. There is however a certain way it has to be done, and a lot of shops refuse to work on it. They just don't know how to handle it considering almost no engines use it. If you follow the Helms manual on boring it out you should do fine.

Good answer. Not many shops willing to invest in the tooling. Fewer that know how to do it even w/ proper equipment. It's not easy, quick, and cheap. We've done several for Honda Challenge guys where the rules don't allow the iron replacement sleeve.
