The distributor is on the left side of the engine as you are facing it. It's the black thing with the 5 wires coming out the top. 4 go to the spark plugs and one to the coil. The part with the wire boots attached is called the cap. It has 3 screws holding it on that can be removed with a stubby #2 phillips screwdriver or a stubby 5/16 hex driver. Remove the cap and transfer your wires in the correct order to your new cap and set it aside. Inside the distributor is the rotor. Grab it firmly and pull it straight off. Sometimes this takes alot of strength. Push the new rotor on until it is seated. Replace the cap making sure that the big oring is in the groove and screw it back down. Nothing to it.
Thank You for the information. Hopefully I can do this. After spending $623.48 on what was supposed just to replace my main fuel relay, I am a little bitter at taking it anywhere. I had went on this site when my car started messing up a little over 2 months ago and got some wonderful information that described my car troubles to a tee, but the mechanics that worked on my car and kept it for 3 1/2 weeks said no that wasn't it. They replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, the distributor, plugs and finally the main relay! They called me after they had the car for a few days and told me my fuel pump was good and the plugs was not bad and the fuel filter was not dirty( but they replaced it all anyway). Then about 3 or 4 days later they called me and said the main relay burn up the fuel pump or the fuel pump burnt up the main relay, they replaced the main relay and said my car was fixed. It never ran right since then!!! I had printed out the information I had received on this site and took it to them at the first, but they just said "Nope it is not the main fuel relay" BUT it was. So I Thank everyone who takes the time to help. I am a single Mom and I am trying to learn how to take care of my own car!!
Ever since I got it back from the mechanics it has had a miss in it. Not all the time ,but it has never ran smooth. It has had a rough idle, like if I was just sitting still sometimes I would have to rev it up just a little or it would die. Friday afternoon I left work and I started to shift gears and it acted like I was in the wrong gear or like something was in the gas...it sounded bad...it sputtered and sounded & felt like it was missing real bad, I had to get home I work 32 miles away. I put more gas in it and bought some Seafoam (I love that stuff), but it didn't help. It had a strong smell (I was told that it was running "Rich",& it was missing, not running on all cylinders. I checked with two other places and they said it could be the distributor or rotor ...bad plug or wire...I just can not afford to put it back in the shop (and trying to find one that won't take me for a ride) and have them "experiment" with my car. I really want to learn how to fix my own car, but it is not easy when I had never even checked my own oil or tire pressure before my divorce. I hope this explains what the problem is this time and I Thank You all again for your help. I wished I could find a mechanic here that knew as much as you'all do and wouldn't legally rob a person.
