auto or manual? check speed sensor first, maybe a loose plug

If you were to tell us that the "Service Engine" lamp was on, I'd suggest the problem was endemic of a defective VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). The signal from this single sensor is supplied, not only to the ECM (Engine Control Module), the TCM (Transmission Control Module (auto) and the Speedometer but also drives the Odometer and the Cruise Control System. Anything which requires knowing how fast the car is traveling.
The "Service Engine" lamp works, right?
I suspect (tentatively) a poor connection either at the cluster, or at the ECM.

If you can think of other things you may have noticed, please relay them. There's not a lot to work with here. Maybe with a few more 'hints'.....
