Default Input Shaft Bearing (yeah I searched)

I know this is one of those questions that is near impossible to answer without actually seeing the car, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway.

I just bought an '88 CRX Si with 215,000 miles on it. The input shaft bearing makes quite a bit of noise when the car is in neutral. It also makes noise when I first start to move in first gear. I've noticed the sound is much louder when I first start up the car after it has been sitting for a few hours without running. After driving a few miles the sound quiets down to a point that it almost can't be heard. I guess the bearing gets coated in oil and that quiets it down.

Here's my questions: For those who have had the same problem; how bad did it get before your car was undriveable? How loud did it get? Did your clutch start to slip (from oil slipping past the bearing and getting on the clutch)? Is there anything I can add to the transmission oil to help it last longer?

I'm a cheap bastard and I want to milk it as long as possible.

There is no way for people here on the net to tell u how loud something is or will be when that bearing lets go.

Here is my somewhat first hand experiecne. My friend's hatch had that bearing going out. All i can say is it was very audible, it didnt seem to get louder or quieter with time, yet he continued to drive the car. Then one day on the freeway it totally let go and the clutch disc got soaked in oil from oil getting shot past the seal. You could risk getting stranded. Just fix the bitch.

my tranny (cable s1) had been makin alot of noise lately and i was quite certain it was one of my case bearings. it did keep getting louder and louder, i could hear it when starting off slow ect ect. a couple weeks ago i just decided to stop driving it and pulled the tranny for a rebuild. sure enough the input shaft case bearing was falling apart. the spacers that held the ball bearings in place had disintigrated and the ***** moved around freely in the bearing housing.

much longer and i would've had metal soup in my tranny case. id reccomend pulling it for a rebuild or swaping out for another tranny soon.

not to mention one of my tabs for the throwout bearing had broken off too... somehow it still shifted fine. dunno

if you have the tools and space to pull your tranni, just take it out. its not that hard to replace the tranni bearings. i replaced my bearing and installed an lsd and had it back in the car the same day.
