Lately when I go to start my del sol it will just do nothing. I will not crank or click. If I kick the clutch pedal a few times it will crank and start. I checked the battery connections and all the grounds, also checked the starter and all of those connections are tight and clean. I looked under the dash at the clutch switch and it had a lot of dirt on it. I cleaned all of that off and it is still doing the same thing. I am pretty sure it is the switch. Do they go bad often or could it be something else. Any ideas are appreciated.

my del sol did the same thing and it was the clutch safety switch. They go bad over time if your car has lot of miles on it.

 

Did you just buy a new one or take it out and clean it?

my nuetral safety does it on my 98 ex, i learned not to push the clutch tight to the floor and that works

 

you can also just disconnect it. Not safest, that's what they do on remote starts for stick.

 

yea just make sure the contacts are good. Had the same problem and couldnt use my car for a week. Clutch relay switch tells you ECU that ur clutch is in so you can start her up.

 

Its a moving part so it will go bad over time, take it out and try to clean it up and grease it if you can. There is also a relay after that the switch controls, it has nothing to do with the ecu.

Current from the key goes to the relay and then to the starter, the switch simply closes that relay letting you start the car by having it in neutral so to speak with the clutch disengaged.

I wouldn't be surprised that some people do that, but what should be done is the starter wire should be taped into after the relay so it still functions as a safety if someone gets in the car and starts it. They should also be using some kind of remote start intended for a manual trans car or have a safety set up on the shifter to ensure its in neutral.

correct, it is a manual remote start. They unplug the clutch saftey switch and cross the wires. so ECU always thinks it is "okay" to start. Now the car wont remote start unless a combination was enabled before turning off the car, and provided the car hasnt been opened since that combo was in force.

Now if you go to just start the car with the clutch not depressed (in gear), it will go to turn over. But try cranking over something with 2000 lbs of resistance. It may hop, but its going to pop a fuse. If the car is in neutral, it would just start.
