Default Turbo in the back?

Some of you might have seen a program where they mounted a turbo in the back of an HHR (or something). Talked about reducing the heat issues, etc. Has anyone tried this? Im trying to get my A/C back in and am considering alternatives to the usual setup. (or if you have have successfully installed a turbo in a ZC CRX and kept you A/C, please tell me how you ran your intercooler lines and what type of manifold you have.

You're probably thinking of the STS setup - http://www.ststurbo.com/home

People tend to knock it because it's different, but if you properly size the turbo, there's really no lag problems... there's really not a whole lot more volume to fill than conventional systems with a front mount. the downside is that your turbo and filter are more exposed to the elements, including speed bumps, and you are limited in how much boost you can run because you have no room for an intercooler (and if you did, that'd be even more volume for the tiny turbo to fill). they seem to work best on big V8s where you can run 3-5 psi and still make a respectable bump in power. 3-5 psi on a ZC won't be worth much.

I've been toying with the idea for a while now. I used to know a guy with a remote turbo CRX that was pretty killer.

The idea of retaining A/C, power steering, and a full-sized radiator in a turbo EF is unheard of. But, if you put the turbo in the back it's totally possible.

Here's a thread I made about it a while ago:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1386968

P.S. If you figure out which oil pump to use, and where to mount it on an EF, let me know!!

We have room in the bay though..Its not like a lt1 camaro where they have no room for anything..

I saw one on a honda..It was a charcoal bubble with the setup..Slow *** **** and it took forever to spool up..Video is on streetfire somewhere..

Wha?

You don't need a manifold for this kind of turbo setup.

Really? Show me an EF with AC, a full sized radiator, and a good sized turbo.

I've never seen one before. Hell, I wrapped my DC header because it almost touches my AC lines, there's no way I could put a turbo up there and keep AC and a full sized radiator.

DUDE DONT PUT THE TURBO IN THE BACK YOU'VE GOT TO REMEMBER THAT THEY ARE DESIGNED TO WORK ONE THE ENGINE IN THE :ENGINE BAY" YOU WILL HAVE A LOT OF TURBO LAG AND JUST CONSIDER IF YOU WANT TO PUT SOMETHING IN THE TRUNK, DONT HAVE ANY KIDS

What makes you think they were "designed to work in the engine bay"? The owners of STS work closely with Garrett and Garrett claims that none of the elements the turbo will be exposed to in the rear of the car will do any harm to the turbo.

Have you ever driven a remote turbo vehicle? Or, did you just assume that there will be a lot of turbo lag? What's wrong with lag anyways? Any good sized turbo will not make power until the last half of the RPM range or less.

He's not talking about puting the turbo in the trunk. LoL. You replace the rear muffler with a turbo, it goes under the car, not inside.

why would it matter if you want to put something in the trunk? the turbo wont be in the trunk itself, it goes underneath the car, like in the pics... and why not have any kids? what does that have to do with anything? lol

edit: he beat me to it..

Turbos are designed to work off of wasted exhaust gases..There is no rule as to where and how you do it..So it doesnt necessarily have to be in the engine bay..I mean you can put it in a baby seat and put in the back for all it matters..

Two reasons I can think of against putting a turbo in the back:
Easily seen and accessed by thieves
If you car is slammed, could be damaged by a speed bump, road debris, etc.

Ya really want me to? hehe... I'll go ya one better

It ain't no EF, but it is everything you think can't happen, but in an even smaller engine bay. Only difference is that it doesn't have a 'full' radiator, but that doesn't matter... it has a dual-core Fluidyne EG rad... its fine. But it DOES have a B16A, Equal length manifold, intercooler, AC, and it all kicks *** and fits within the confines of the CRX front end. If i can fit all that crap in a 1st Gen Rex, i can -definitely- fit it all in a 2g Rex

Damn!

That's a tight fit! Doesn't someone on here have that same generation Civic with some other DOHC VTEC engine? I think I remember seeing one.

That's pretty amazing that it was all able to fit under there. I bet that car hauls *** too!

yea.. under that header panel is a maze of crap.. lol! I'll get the gallery back up on my website of the car as i was building it on Monday, but everything is within like 1/4" of everything else. Not much room to do much of anything bigger under there.

And yea, it does haul ***... its a stock B16A motor, with only a thicker headgasket. If i recall correctly, we put a Precision SC34 turbo in there, and it makes about 300whp or so
