A few months ago i decided to paint my 2000 Si wheels that had some corrosion around the hubs and lip. I decided to go with black. here is a write up on the process. -Enjoy-

Paint materials:
1 qt. -Black- PPG DCC9000 Acrylic Urethane (~$100 per qt.)
1 qt. DT870 Reducer ($included with paint)
1/2 pt. DCX61 Hardener ($included with paint)
2 cans Dupli-color Self-Etching Primer (~$5 per can)

Other materials:
Masking tape
high strength stripper (i used Turco)
Paint gun
respirator (Always use with Urethane paints)

I started by breaking the tire bead with a bead breaker, you don't have to do this but it makes it easier to mask off the tire and paint the edge of the lip.

Next I stripped the factory clear-coat and paint off using the stripper, just brush it on and let it sit for about an hour then rinse with a hose.

After the paint and clear coat was stripped i sanded the wheels with 380 grit sand paper and taped the tire off. Make sure to tape all the way down to the bead of the tire and all the way out to the edge. make sure to do both sides.

Next I cleaned the wheel with water and let dry then applied several light layers of primer (Until the wheel was uniformly covered)

Now I finally started to paint. Mix the paint according to the directions and apply very light dustings, eventually it will build up to a gloss and have a nice smooth finish with no runs. I used a HVLP gravity fed gun, i found it to be the best thing for painting wheels. I painted the back side first so i could turn the wheels over while the paint was still wet and dont worry about ruining the finish. (the back lip will not touch when face up.) You dont need to clear coat DCC paint.

Once i was finished painting i let the wheels dry for about a day and a half before removing the tape.

Last thing to do is put on the center caps, fill with air, and put on the car.

I have had these wheels on my hatch since the end of October and had no problems with chipping or peeling. Even after a lot of salt on the roads last month they still look flawless.

That's a damn sight more technical than my "scuff them up with a brillo pad and then spray them with a rattle can" method. I get bored and re-paint them every year or so, so I don't care if it's all beat up by the time I get around to it agian.

I had some SI rims like yours... peeling clear coat and some MAJOR curbage on 2 of them also. Picked them up mad cheap. I decided to polish them though. Took about 5 hours per rim. Here is a crappy pic for anyone wondering. The paint looks good, but I didn't have acess to a sprayer like you, so this was a better option in my case...

Don't mind the bumper, its rigged for now because of the charge pipes

 

great work and information, but I personally dislike Si wheels in any color form except stock, they are just too fat to me. You also didnt paint the wheels for me, so it doesn't matter.
