Default Question

More than likely, I wil be trading my R for a 3.2 TL. I can not afford a 06 TL but wil settle for either a 2001-2003 TL Type S 4 door.

My question is. What is the difference between a standard TL and a Type S. 2001-2003 4- door. Only visual thing I see is the wheels, and the motor has like 20 more horsepower. What else?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

35 more hp, higher redline, stiffer suspension, white faced gauges, perforated leather seats with larger bolsters, different shift ****, stability control system instead of traction control. Plus a few other things I've overlooked I'm sure.

Well good lord, I might have to search for a Type S then.

What are somethings I should be looking at? I worked at a Honda dealer so I know what to look for if it has been in an accident. But anything else? I know if a dealership like acura or honda has one, they will jack up the price, but I want to get one that has been treated well, low miles (hahah yeah right), and looks great.

There is one across my house. 2001 TL. Non type S. 48,000 miles gold gold interior or baige. Must of been an old ladies car because it has a sticker that says "certified" dent free lol.

I'd definitely go for the Type-S if possible, I find the premium model to be pretty dull on the fun-to-drive side of things. The main issue with TL's is the fact that they are prone to transmission problems. Honda extended the warranty on the TL transmissions to 100k miles due to this. So I'd avoid buying one near or over 100k, wouldn't be pleasant having to come out of pocket to replace the trans. Other than that, I'd make sure any applicable recalls have been done. There is one that applies to the trans regarding insufficient lubrication to 2nd gear, as well as several others depending on the year. Overall, I'd say they are solid cars outside of the trans issues.

Totally agree with the problems you mentioned. You wouldn't believe how many transmissions we replace in TL's. And def check to make sure it's had the 2nd gear inspection like Kenso said. Although even if it has the kit on it, they can still fail.

Also wanted to add be ready for EGR problems. Those ports clog so quickly and easily, especially if you run shittier gas (lower octane then called for). That warranty is extended as well, and depending on the year, you'll either get a new EGR valve, EGR pipe kit, cleaning of the ports, etc. Again, make sure you stay within the warranty (though it's not a fortune if you have to do this out of warranty).

And we do have our share of seat heaters that stop working, for some reason. Don't actually know why, they seem to short out and burn up a little (no safety hazard, don't worry!)

Those were just the things that popped into my head. They are of course great cars. Though if you are looking a certified, low mileage, 01-03, if you can afford an 03, really take a look an 04. <This is opinion> but I think the styling, both in and out is better. Not to mention the engine is better, and best of all, you can get a 6 speed. And trust me, if you drive one of the 6 speeds, you'll fall in love. It's a great transmission that is def geared more towards poeple who "like to drive". It's not sloppy or loose at all

Hope this helps, good luck with the car shopping!
