Last update on #0559 stolen/recovered
Hey guys-
just a final update on my R. As you all know, it was stolen and recovered. Was totally stripped...nothing much left. It was the typical MO, motor, wheels, tranny, etc missing, all interior. They hot wired it and did an ECU swap to start it.
I have askd the insurance company, and they will NOT sell me the shell. I got the first low-ball offer, so if anyone is selling a 2001 R, email me your selling price and a phone number to pradasurfer@aol.com
I have called several already to verify selling prices and availability.
It is with great regret that i inform you all that Ralphy and his bunch is winning and i will NOT be getting another R. I cant justify taking another one and possibly having the same thing happen, and I cant afford the extra monthly expense to keep it safe. I was going to get a new Civic sI, but come to find they are going to be just as hot, so off to a POS, boring grocery getter. THANKS RALPHY!
Dave..sorry about the tow bill..not sure how that happened, it should be taken care of already, i'll make sure today and call you this evening. I got a new cell phone.

Sorry for all the bad news, but maybe you are better off.
I suggest picking up and 05 WRX, nice car and with the end of the year you can get a GREAT deal on one like very low 20s if you are a good negotiator.

I suspect it's one of two things:
1) Some states don't allow the insurance companies to sell back cars that are 7 years old or newer (Illinois, for example). Florida may be the same way.
2) It's the insurance company's car once they pay you off.. They are free to do with it as they please, which includes not selling it back to you. Maybe they think it will bring more money at auction.
sucks though.. I would've bought it off him..

...or on certain types of cars and bikes, they rebuild them with theft in mind. They then loan them out to specific law-enforcement agencies that have seen spikes in theft of particular vehicles and then these salvaged and rebuilt cars are used as bait.
Once these cars are loaned out for a specific period of time, they then get reused by other enforcement agencies across the nation. I've been trying to get on the team full-time with my employer for over 4 years now.
With historical data, whoever your provider is, they may have decided to keep the car to rebuild it for their own use.
================================================== ==
As for the idea of getting more money at an auction, the larger ins. companies typically have relationships with brokers to buy a certain allotment of salvaged vehicles for a set price, regardless of type of car and condition of the wreck. The broker then turns around and makes money auctioning them off on his time. My employer keeps regional relationships. In some states, they maintain this relationship with brokers, in others, they maintain a relationship directly with the auction house.
Smaller insurance companies may hire their own broker, but I'm not sure.
My assumption would be that the insurance company would rather you buy your car back at whatever the set price to the broker is, if not more. This saves the company money and time by saving on vehicle transfer, storage, title transfer, etc. Unless the claimant either does not own the car, or state law prohibits it, there aren't too many reasons an insurance company wouldn't want to sell you your car back.

I don't know about FL, but in CA they don't sell it back often times to prevent fraud. For example, someone can arrange to have their car stolen and stripped, get their insur. claim, then buy the shell back and install all the old parts which they still have, and profit a few thousand dollars in the process.

Dude sorry about what happened, but please don't give up so easily. You do not have to go from type R to minivan overnight. There are plenty affordable cars out there that are fun daily drivers that thieves keep their ******* hands off of.
Best of luck
You may wanna look at these... '06 SE-R Spec V, Scion TC, SRT-4, VW GTI/JETTA GLI, Cobalt SS/ION REDLINE, Mazdaspeed 6, WRX, etc.
These cars keep the honda scum away and aren't slit your wrists boring like a minivan/camry/galant would be.

Honestly in your situation, I would not buy another R as for that one will most likely get stolen just like the first one did, being you dont have a garage and you live in miami.
What did your insurance company offer you to setttle the claim? If you don't mind me asking.
All the info about my theft/settlement is in a thread on this page.
I was considering an SI as well. I think the most lateral move for us R owners would be an 04/05 S2000. That will most likely be my next move.

Opie is correct.. I know lots of numb nuts that have swaps they bought for cheap....and they laugh about it but then bitch about their **** getting stolen..
I will say though that we have seen fewer theft RSX's than say 99-00 Civic Si's and by far fewer than 94-01 Integra's. I think the IMM is definitely helping but if people want you car... as in the case above.. they are going to have an ecu and the rest is history.. That is why i wheel boot my baby every night.. If they want it bad enough to steal it with the boot, alarm, etc then they are bound and determined...

Type S's are already getting stolen frequently, now that hasport has the K series engines mounts for civic chasis, which became cheaper recently.</TD></TR></TABLE>
In clubrsx someones rsx was stolen in Florida and they took the motor and seats out..... Fawk sucks if the RSX becomes the next integra in theft because with the RSX as a daily I dont have any worries to go anywhere..

Unfortunately, S2000's are starting to get stolen as well; especially the '04 and '05s. Younger S2K owners are willing buy stolen parts for their earlier model S2000's which are had fairly cheaply.
The '04+ motor is stronger, the diff housing is stronger, the transmission is better, the door panels and center counsel are more sought after, and definitely the AP2 wheels are more wanted.
Other than that, other Honda owners want the seats, the gauge cluster, shift ****, and other stuff.
S2000's are getting stolen the same way other IMM using Hondas...plug in a Mugen, Spoon, or JDM ecu...then crank the ignition and drive off (just easier, because to get in they don't have to break any glass or anything. Just pierce a small hole in the top, and go fishing for the lock.
I'm not trying to scare anyone away from owning an S2K, I've enjoyed mine for 5+ years...but it's now looking like I'm going to have to start protecting it like you guys do your ITRs and I do my RS.
