axle seals
well i just put in a b16 with the y1 tranny and for some reason i am leaking tranny fluid, and i believe it is coming from the axle. it is running under where the tranny and bloack meet up and just was a steady little run. my questions are
1) how easy is it to change them?
2)where to get the new "seals" or whatever the part is?
3) how much is it gonna cost?
i just wanna drive my car but i just have to look at it
thanks for the help

One of my axel seals was torn for some reason, resulting in massive fluid loss. I just took the axle out, popped the old one out with a screwdriver, and put the new one in. Put the axle back in, and I was done. 10 minutes max.
so the axle seal itself is right on the outside i wont have to take off my tranny?
also where can i get the new seals?
what seals will fit? can i use some from any b series? how much do they cost??

yea it sits right inside where the axle goes in. You can't miss it.
I got my seals from Checkers, no more than $8 a piece I think. They had to order mine in so it was a slight pain in the *** with the delay, but it wasn't too bad. I don't know which ones are for your application though. Ask around.

When you get the new seal in, put some grease on the inner surface that contacts the axle. Put some grease on the axle shaft as well. Do this everytime you remove/install the axle and it will reduce the chances of tearing the seal.
Also, if you jack up one side of the car to replace the seal, rather than lift the whole nose of the car, it'll shift the fluid away from the seal you're changing and you won't have to drain the tranny fluid. Saves a bit of hassle.
Good luck.

1. Changing axle seals is relatively straightforeward. You simply need to remove the axles, pop out the old seal, and drive the new one in.
2. The seals are sold at any Honda/Acura dealer. Just be sure to get the right iones for your transmission and axles. For a Y1 transmission using standard Integra axles and a standard Y1 or S1 intermediate shaft, you need seals from a 1990-1993 Integra.
3. The seals themselves cost $16 each. But keep in mind that you also need oil. And the price goes up further if you need to pay someone else to do the job or buy extra tools to make it possible to DIY.
Also, you might want to first clean away all the oil in order to see where it is really coming from. It could be coming from someplace entirely different

the seal's are easy to replace and they don't cost too much i payed like 8 buck a pice all you need is a flat head screw driver and a hammer small one the seals are right threre where you slide the axel to the tranny there black all you do si caerfully pry them from the inside out then put the new seal and hammer them in lightly

Dude, that big black seal that contacts the input portion of your CV axle is the axle seal.

ok so they axle seal is not the problem. it looks like it is leaking from the transaxle. it looks like it has a gap that shouldnt be there and everything around it is covered in oil. can anyone tell from the pics if this is how it is suppose to look.
It still looks like the axle seal from what I can tell, that is where the half shaft goes into the tranny and it looks fine just dirty. Your axle seal is really the only thing in that pic that would be leaking there. Other than the seal for your shifter input shaft on the trans there really are no other seals that would leak on a 5spd.
As far as the axle seal I am pretty sure the 90-91 LS integra trans is the same size/shape and should correspond with the y1 tranny you have (also 90-91 just JDM)

well the axle seal isnt even in the picture and that is dry. the part that is all oily is the place where the transaxle meets the tranny and it has a gap that i am not sure is suppose to be there

The trans axle/tranny is the pretty much the same thing on this style tranny, it's all in the same housing so I am not sure what you are talking about. The trans housing would only leak if someone took the tranny apart and did not use silicone when putting it back together, assuming your axle seals and input seal is ok.

Well i am trying to repost your pic so people can see but my website is down right now so i can't host it. The only thing in that pic is pretty much where the halfshaft goes into the tranny and the only thing that will be leaking there (in the pic) would be the axle seal or the oil pan gasket, it is not hard to diagnos where oil is coming from on these cars. Just clean the area really well and then after running the car for a bit you will see where it is leaking from w/o question. You sound like your trying to take your motor out to change the oil filter. What ever is leaking (Unless you have a bad rear main seal but you said tranny fluid)) will not be that hard to get to if it is in fact trans fluid. You need someone with honda knowledge around to show you what is what.

Pull the axle out, then use a screwdriver or something the ory out the old seal. A large diameter socket works great for driving the new axle seal back in place, one of the easiest things to do on a Honda!
