Ok well i have a toasted b17 engine, built (rods, pistons, head). Droppped a valve.
Anyway, trying to plan on what to buy for the rebuild. So im workingo n the assumption the rods (crowler) and crank are still good. What this will do if put in the right block will retain the nice strok the b17 provides.
THE PLAN
-------------------
So I know the crank will need to be balanced, should i get it machined at all or would that be unecessary?
Next is the block - The b17 block i have would need to be bored and sleeved in order to be reused. My power goals dont warrant all that so I just plan on running stock sleeves on a b16/b18 block. Will the b17 crank work in a b16 AND b18 block?.
Next is the tranny - I have a 98 GSR Tranny with OBX Lsd in there right now and would like to keep it at all costs- does this mean I have to run a b18?Will a 98 GSR tranny bolt up to a b16 AND b18?
The Head- Retainers and Valve Springs from my old setup are still good. Im worried the springs are TOO tensile and cause my valve to break? They are "Chevy Big Block Valve Springs" according to the prev owner...
. They are dual springs.
I plan to re-use the Ti retainers on the new head. I am contemplating running Stock springs and valves or aftermarket... [b]Are aftermarket really worth the money?[b] Seems they might of hurt me in this situation. Also I am going to get ITR camshafts.
Pistons - Arias 9:1 Can I use b18/b16 pistons on the b17 rods?
Rods and Crank - B17 Crank and Crowler b17 rods!!!
Power Goals: 480whp/460tq @ 18psi
---------------------
Thanks for all the help guys! I am trying to build this right

The b17 crank will work in a b18 block...although i'm sure you would have to get custom rods made...if you use a 1.8 block, you might as well use the crank it came with...just for the record, b17 blocks are exactly the same as the B16 blocks.
the GSR trans will work on any B-series motor...with the exception of 88-91 Prelude B20/B21 motors.
ITR cams will serve you just fine....stay away from after market all-motor cams, they have too much overlap so the boost just leaks out..

awesome good info
If I use a b18 block i would need custom rods for the b17 crank? I have the b17 crank and b17 crowler rods... couldnt I just use these rods in the b18 block giving it the b17s stroke?
thanks

nah....the rod length for b17 rods is 132 mm if memory serves...LS is 137mm, GS-R 137.9...basically you can't use your existing rods in an LS/GS-R because the block is taller, so your piston at TDC would be about 5mm short of the top of the bore....the only way to use the b17 crank would be to have custom rods OR pistons made

i'm not the most experienced builder or tuner, but what i'm wondering is...
if what you say is true and the b17 rods will put the piston 5mm short of the top of the bore, wouldn't that lower his c/r, which would allow him to run more boost?
again, like i said, i'm not experienced like that, but i was just putting 2 and 2 together.

5mm is way too much though....i'm not even sure it would run with that low of compression......

As I mentioned already, the b17 block and b16 are interchangeable...they are the same casting..A B17 is just a B16 with a longer stroke and shorter rods...

Yes, as they share the same deck height.
