which bearing is it
ive done alot of searching but my situation sounds unique. when the clutch is pressed down there is no noise. when the clutch is released in neutral it makes noise like a bunch of metal ***** rolling. (duh its a bad bearing) then when im under like 40mph it mikes noise that gets higher in pitch up untill like 40 when it goes away. is it the throw out or input shaft bearing or some other bearing also how many hours of labor do you guys think a shop would charge to fix one of this along with a clutch install.
it could also just be the springs in the pressure plate rattling around making noise. it happens quite often in the type r's do a search in that forum if you want to see if yours might have the same problem
i have the exact same problem weird sound coming from the transmission in neutral, goes away when the clutch is pushed down. just noticed it 2 hours ago! looking in my haynes manual it says "noisy in neutral with engine running" underneath the heading of "Clutch" it says it could be a Damaged input gear bearing or a damaged clutch release bearing.
i have no idea where the input gear bearing is in transmission, clutch release bearing doesnt look hard to fix, says in the manual that it's "common" to replace the clutch release bearing when changing the clutch...i can tell my mechanic is no common mechanic

Well, if your input bearing was bad, it would squeal no matter if you had the clutch in or out as the shaft would still be rotating in the same spot (The shaft does not move)
So, I conclude it is a bad throw-out bearing. No biggie, you should replace that when you change the clutch and pressure plate and surface the flywheel.
Also, you should check the input shaft to make sure your throw-out has not worn a groove into it. It shouldnt have as the throwout bearing has a plastic bushing on it and would have to wear pretty badly to start to wear the input shaft. But if you feel a noticable groove on the input shaft, you should have the tranny looked at by a professional, or at least use a micrometer to make sure it is within tolerance.
Hope this helps...
