Default A couple questions about CV boots

I recently put new axles in my car and one of them leaks. Not from a hole or tear, but leaking from the big end, flinging goo all around.

My question is, just how much grease is supposed to be in there? I know some people pack the boots full of grease, which seems like a bad idea. The grease in the boot doesn't help the CV at all. Only the grease inside the CV housing is doing the bearings any good. So, is there any reason to have any grease at all in the boot itself? Also, how tight is "tight enough" when tightening the band clamp? Since mine is leaking from the big end, I assume just tightening up the clamp will fix it... I hope.

Are your axles new or remanufactured? Most new and remanufactured axles have limited lifetime warranties so if you are flinging grease around something is wrong and I would return it. I had that problem and next thing you know there was no grease left and the axle ended up going out. I would just return it to the store you bought it at, if that is an option.

i spent a 1000 bucks for enjo axles and they started doing that **** only a few weeks later. They fixed it for free but I had to pay another 200 bucks for shipping them to canada and wait about a month.

I'd take em back if you can and get some new ones.

Nope, they're custom axles assembled by me.

This isn't rocket science, it's a boot with some grease in it. So it leaks a little, it can't be that hard to diagnose. Easy for me to say... since I'm asking you guys. I was asking to see if it was a simple fix like as tightening the band clamp.

i'd say tighten it but make sure the surfaces its sealing on are grease free so it will seal tight.

I am not to sure how much grease is suppose to be in there but man when mine have broken open it looks like someone took an entire can and put it all over my suspension and wheel. What a pain to clean up.

By the way love the mini website, talk about some work. It looks awsome.

I bought a remanufactured axle for my Accord, installed it, took a test drive and jumped on the freeway for about a half mile and turned around to go home made it a block from my house and the axle snapped. Had to take it back out and take it in for a new one and got another axle that popped everytime I turned. Parts store tried saying it was my fault and didn't want to honor the warranty until I told them the tire shop checked things out and verified everything. Third one was a charm and needless to say I will not be going back there for any parts.

The joint housing is only supposed to be filled about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way. I recently replaced both sides on my lude and it came with lube grease in a packet (premeasured I am sure) but did not fill much of the boot.

Thanks for the help guys. Yeah right now I believe the boot is undamaged, and just wasn't tight enough. Fingers crossed on the new band clamp.
