Just wondering what peoples biggest regret (parts wise/tuning) in regards to their turbo build were? Whether it be shooting for 700whp or 200whp. If you knew then, what you know now, what would have changed?

Were there certain parts that you originally had on your car/engine that didn't last long, that you wish you would have done right away? Traction bars, boost controllers, fire-wall oil feed lines, different turbo size (smaller or bigger), different compression ratio, stainless steel lines, different tuning devices etc...

Just looking to see if a general theme comes up

 

I would have built a 351W.

 

If I knew back then, what I know now, I would have bought a porsche and called it a day.

 

I would have taken the rush out of it. (Apply to everything in life)

 

I would have bought a non-economy RWD sports coupe w/ a stiff chasis and room for lots of rubber.

I learned FWD sucks. I went with RWD.
I learned non turbo cars to turbo are not worth the headaches they cause. .. I went with a factory turbo car.
I learned not to build a car you still owe alot of money on. . .I now built a car I own.
I learned you never get out of it what you put into it. . . Dont plan on selling your car. lol

....It IS fun to have a fast FWD honda that hooks to suprise the expletive out of vettes, porsche's, evo's, etc...

Couldn't agree more...would've taken more time getting the RIGHT parts instead of ghetto plumbing it. And just a cleaner install in general. I was just eager to see if it would actually work

 

Don't get me wrong. If ghetto parts is what you'll be using, than rock on with yo bad self. Don't use ghetto parts when you didn't intend to though.

being cheap will ALWAYS cost you more money. luckily i learned that lesson by watching other people be cheap.

you usually make more money by parting your car out than you do trying to sell it as a modified car.

buy a twin disk clutch. single disk clutches suck.

dont waste your time going to the track on street tires. once you put slicks on it you will understand why

if you want a race car...build a race car. if you want a street car...build a street car. if you try to do both...usually it will not be that awesome at either.

 

I know the exact goals for my turbo setup, and how i can reach them. I realize the cost involved.
It's just up the individual whether or not its worth the time, effort, and occasional headache.

 

You should be discouraged, many people start out boosting Hondas and FWD cars, and learn that FWD does majorly suck for hooking and racing. Its not like RWD or AWD where you can get some mean rubber out back and get good suspension to let the car squat. Its alot harder.

Yet on that note, I just sold my 99 Cobra and am in the market for another GSR to play around with. It is cheaper and gets better gas milage. Although I must admit, as soon as I gradute, I will be buying an Evo IX or Supra TT, whichever one I find first.

I would have bought a $800 welder instead of a cheap one the first time.

I would have used stainless steel the first time.

I would have bought a good EMS instead of trying several that didn't work and later settling on a MegaSquirt. Hell, if I would have known better, I would have run my car off of a Honda ECU with Uberdata. (It's a Kia, but who says I can't do it? Just install a MAP, make a conversion harness and call it a day)

I would have never attempted to make a thin-wall turbo manifold.

I would have installed a new Garrett T25 instead of junkyard turbos.

I would have gotten the right equipment and learned to weld aluminum.

I would have measured twice and gotten the right intercooler the first time.

I would have never cut a f#!@%& hole in my hood.

Its not like its not the truth.
FWD turbo Hondas are not where its at. Never been where its at really. They are fun as hell though not knocking that. But I would never go back to FWD and 4cyl if I had a choice.
RWD makes things much easier, and TQ doesnt hurt either.
Once you go to the other side the perspectives change.

 

I've had my hand in a lot of projects but the main lesson that people need to learn is TUNE THE CAR PROPERLY. It's all a learning experience, i look back and am glad i blew a few motors because i learned on each one. It's an expensive lesson but its one that is hard to forget. You gotta pay to play!

 

Besides the Kia I have owned nothing but RWD V8 cars. I would take the 30+ mpg any day. If you want more torque, get a turbo that spools up before 9000 RPM.

Although, a turbo 4-cyl RWD car might be fun. Or, how about a turbo hybrid? Lol.

 

not too many turbo people see 30+ mpg any more. Boost is too tempting and lack of tuning doesnt help.

 

Oh yea, turbo Miata would be awesome.

I guess thats your opinion, I am coming from 3 fbodies . two LT1's and an LS1 all modded and I would never go back. I guess my perspective is not the same as yours.
