BAD surging idle....I SEARCHED
a week or two ago, my 4th gen VTEC started surging idle on cold start up (30-40*F). it would bounce from 1000 to 2500 repeatedly until the car warmed up. Now within the past few days, its gotten worse. It doesnt go away when the car gets warm...it never goes away. its getting really embarrasing and EXTREMELY annoying. i searched and found out theres a "screw" or plate that comes loose over time and needs tightening. without taking my CAI off, i closely examined the TB and area around it and only found 1 screw on the TB with a flathead groove in it. this cant be the right screw because i tightened it a little and it didnt effect the rough idle at all. i need someone to show me exactly what i need to do (pics would be nice) to remedy this problem. cars got 112, 000 miles. thnx in advance.
you probably have a vaccum leak somewhere. and it sounds like a big one.
try taking off your intake and starting your car. there are two holes in the throttle body. towards the back of the car. try covering one at a time and see if the idle steadys. I believe the bottom hole is for the iacv. or if that doesnt fix it you might have a leak somewhere else. just try finding it its not that hard.

It could be your IACV, FITV, vacuum leak, throttle body screw, leaky IM gasket, or a range of other things. There have been many topics on this subject and tons of info has already been typed...just run a search for some of these things.
same thing with mine but mine goes away after it warms up. what could this be?
sorry for jacking thread but dont want to start a new one

does it still surge if you press the gas pedal a little big? try unplugging hte iacv or the fitv(i dont know what that stands for but im guessing its the same type of thing as the iac) and if niether of these make it quit surging it must be a vacuum leak. well not must but more than likely.

are you throwing a code ? If the vac leak is large enough, you will throw an IACV code . Has the pitch/sound of the motor changed ? Another sign of a vac leak. Go over all the gaskest from the intake manifold up. ( manifold gasket, IAB plate gasket, TB gasket. ) Spray a little bit of carb cleaner or something in the suspected area. If you hear gurgling and see bubbles, you found it
well i took my FITV off my h22 thats going to be swaped in in a few months. slaped it on the h23 TB and now it idels fine. thanks for all the info
glad you fixed the problem, something for me to look into although mine's a little different. i think i have a vaccum leak seeing as it rapidly idles up and down sitting in neutral...or TB issue.
FYI, preludes are notorious for the high idle when it's cold (esp. weather conditions) and they normally run hot. hood works great for a heater in winter at the track!
