Default weight reduction

does renoving the interior panals actually make a noticeable change in acceleration and performance?

does doing weight reduction and making the car light actually make a performance change?

If u remove enough weight, yeah it does, but the panels do not weight enough to see a noticeable difference. Take off the sound deadening stuff and that will take ALOT of weight off.

yes i agree that losing a significant amount of weight will improve your performance, but i dont understand your poll...

sound deadening, taking out the passenger seat and getting a bucket seat will honestly do the most. i gutted my black crx to the fullest, even the heater core (weighs quite a bit when all said and done). i loved it. did it help. maybe a bit. but every little bit counts cause by and inch or a mile....every little bit counts.

i was trying to keep the quote subtle. i personally kinda hate those quotes but this one being somewhat true its sorta ok.

F= Force
M=Mass
A= Acceleration

F = M*A

so... F/M=A

in an almost embarrasingly simple physics equation, it can be shown that with the same applied force, a reduction in weight causes an increase in acceleration.

take your air conditioning out, im sure the compressor & bracket weigh more than all those interior panels.

Also, the less thought of...

1 pound = 16 ounce
1 gallon [US, liquid] = 128 ounces [US, liquid]
Each gallon of gasoline = 8 pounds

My passanger side seat and rear seat = almost 50 pounds

Rear interior pieces...maybe 10 pounds?

ADD IN: Weight was another factor as to why I went with the single cam over the DOHC motors.

Power to weight ratios

the general rule of thumb for drag racing is....every 100 lbs you take off will gain you approx. one tenth of a second on the strip. now a tenth might not seem like much ,but take a trip to the track some night and see how many people get beat by a tenth. a lighter car also tends to be more nimble and responsive when cornering too.

A liquid ounce is not equal to a weight, it is a volume. To say 128 liquid ounces weighs 8 lbs is like saying a gallon is a unit of weight, which isn't true. A liquid ounce is a unit of volume, and since not all liquids have the same density, cannot be directly converted into mass. Water is 8.33 lbs/gal. The weight of a gallon of gasoline varies based on specific gravity, and varies from 5.8 lbs/gal to 6.3 lbs/gal. Premium fuel is a little heavier than unleaded, due to refining and additives.

Back on topic, Acceleration = Force / Mass. Reducing the mass yields greater acceleration for a given force.

So 1 gallon = 8 pounds is not true?...well then weight is still weight. You would still have less weight through a 4 gallon tank of gas than a full 12 gallon tank. I would still use the circa 8lbs/ gallon for a ball park.

A gallon of water is ~8 lbs, but a gallon of fuel is lighter. Like all other materials, different liquids have different densities. That's why oil floats on water, it is less dense. And water will fall to the bottom of a fuel tank, so it gets picked up easier and causes problems.

correct, standard fuel averages 6#/gallon.... google it up!

So has anyone determined just how much weight can be removed by scraping out the sound-deadening tar?

I saw a couple people saying ~40 lbs! I'll be taking mine out, along with the dash mat crud, and will have numbers when I do. Of course, I'm a lazy bastard, so who knows how long that it will be before I can get to it.
