a poor man's type-r engine is a P72 block (gs-r block, but also same block that type-r is), a PR3 head (b16 head, same as type-r), high compression pistons, type-r cams, etc...

and for future question's like this one, don't make a post about it on h-t, just ask your friend who is talkin about it.

first off, there's is no such thing as a p72 block true the GSR block (b18c1) and the type R block (b18c5) are the same casting. And the b16 head is not the same as the type R, there are plenty of difference in the two.

And to answer the original question. A poor mans type R is any non-vtec block with a v-tec head on it.

non-vtec engines...
b18a
b18b
b20
slap a v-tec head on one of those engines from a GSR (b18c1) , Type R (b18c5), or an Si (b16) and you got your self a "poor mans type R" or as most people call it an ls/vtec setup, which is not a good idea unless you know what your doing.

so for future reference, don't post unless you got an answer to the original posters question, just save yourself the trouble and push the back button on your browser.

beavis you are wrong bud. a poor mans type R is a gsr block with a b16 head and itr pistons and cams...

the rod/stroke ratio or a b20/b18 non vtec block is way different than that of a gsr/type R.. so therefore there are no similarities between those b20 - ls/vtec combos and a TYPE R.. don't act so smart because you obviously don't know what your talking about.. they call it a poor man's type R because that setup shares very similar numbers and with some port work and springs/retainers and cams the B16 head can be made the same as the type R head. and the type R has the same block basically as the gsr other than the pistons which when you change them to type R you will ahve yourself a type R motor for half the price ... which brings the name ' poor man's type R' to make alot of sense...

I've got a very simple setup I consider "poor man's type r"

GSR block
P30 pistons
GSR head
ITR valvetrain
'01 ITR cams

Put down 178whp and 130tq at 92-degree ambient temp and 70% humidity

I beat a civic up a hill on the parkway in my Yukon today, does that count as a "poor mans Type R"?

A type r is already a poor man's sports car to begin with... so its sad that there is a poor man's version of the type r.
