Default Track car only - strip my 90 Si, or wait for an 88hf

well i'm really torn in this situation i got 2 crx's one is my baby 89si, who gets all the good stuff, and recently i aquired an 90si parts car for 300$

now i started taking all the good stuff that 90+ years had an putting them on my baby (dash, guage cluster, front bumper, rear disks, etc) but now i got a dilemma on what to do with the 90si

a while ago i decided that my 89 is my great daily driver, and i'll keep at as lexury as possible (stereo full interior etc) and i decided there is no point of making a heavy car go into the race world, and i want a dedicated track car

so i can either use the 90si or wait for an 88HF to come up

here is my reasoning for the 90si (vs hf)

- variable pinion steering
- better suspension, including sway bars
- the Si seat
- the Si motor

i figure i can do a lot of stuff to make it lighter, i wont need anything but a seat, engine, 4 wheels, and a guage cluster, it will be completely striped, the door reinforcements gone, i can put the HF bumper supports, take out the sunroof and weld in a piece of metal

and hopefully get it down to about 1900 pounds

or i can go the HF route
1830 pounds stock

BUT, some of the reasons its lighter is
- lighter engine
- less suspension components
- lighter crappier seat
- no rear wiper (will be shaved on 90si)
- no AC (will be gone from Si)
- no sunroof (will be gone from Si)
- Smaller exhaust piping (will be changed anyway)
- crappy flimsy steering wheel
and some other minor parts, which will need to be upgraded anyway, adding weight

the Si is already performance oriented and make like that from the factory, HF among the many reasons is lighter because its missing some of the "performance" parts

i hope some of you get what im getting at here

basically the question is wheither i should find an 88hf or just stick with 90si

oh yeah and how low can i go with the 90si, without buying any more parts, rather taking them off

and also, i guess this is lurking in my mind, if i start uprading the stripped HF with better suspension, better motor, etc, wouldnt it weight just as much as a striped "HF'ed" Si?

thanks in advance

I believe 90-91 got side impact beams in the doors. These weigh like 50 lbs each. Good for daily driving, but bad for a track car (if you have a roll cage)

they really weight that much?

i can just cut them out right?

if they really do weight 50 each, that pretty much solves my problem

i need to drop 300 from parts that the HF dosnt have to be HF'ed

100 from the doors
30 from sunroof
50 from bumer support swaped

that leaves me with 120 pounds, that is probably in the engine/seats/exhaust piping/fuller interior/ac/sun visors, steering wheel, suspension, all the little stuff

The weight reduction progress is very expensive and it requires a lot of time.

You said you'll take wiper arm off, put a smaller exhaust and take the sunroof out. Okay, thats fine. But i'd say thats useless, those things maybe get you 30 pounds off. I think not even that.

You're driving a 2200pound car. You dont have to fight with the weight, even if you rolled to racetrack with full interior and sunroof open.

BUT, if you would drive a new 95-> car with safety bodyframe witch weights itself half of our whole car. And if you have a bigger 3500pound car, then you could think about the extreme weight reduction.

But if you really feel need to reduct the weight of your car, start from the doors, glasses and quarterpanels.

Good luck for your project.

I do not belive you would lose 50lbs there.
Here is the HF vs SI comparison:

i dont remember the specific numbers, but i was talking about the rear AND the front support together

i believe that the Si's are about 35 front and 30 rear (or close to it) and the HF is like 10 and 5, which would let me drop 25 pounds in each front or rear, adding to 50

and as far as the comment about not worrying about weight, yes i do realize that 2100 pound car is very light by today's terms, but me only owning a CRX, it feels pretty heavy to me at this point, and if im making a track car out of the other one, i'd love it to be lighter, plus since it will be a track only car, it will not need anything, except steering wheel, seat, engine, wheels, and a guage cluster, that's all, so why not drop the pounds while im at it, if i want the interior i got the other Si

as far as the door reinforcement again... is it inside the actual door, or is it in the frame right behind the door?

there is the same "amount" of sussy components, just the SI has thicker sway bars
even if you shave your rear wiper, your motor will still be in the hatch, which is most of the weight anyways
HF does have a/c, so that isnt a reason its lighter
the exhaust piping wouldnt make that much of a difference either, the weight difference would be nill

with the right weight reduction, you could be damn close to the same weight as a stripped HF. IMO its not a reason to hold out for

thank you, thats exactly the comment i was looking for, and you even rephrased like 2 paragraphs that i wrote into one basic question "can a 90si, be striped to a similar weight as a striped 88hf, with the right swap over of parts"
