Default Should I get a B16 or Type-R head ported?

Assuming both heads use ITR LMAs, valvetrain, etc is there any difference in flow between a B16 or Type-R head after a full port and polish? Basically, would it be worth it to send off a more expensive Type-R cylinder head to be ported versus just a standard B16 VTEC head? Or will they end up being essential the same after the headwork?

just porting the bowls pretty much turns a B16 head into a Type-R head

I usually tell customers to provide a good B16 head that has minimal port shift.

Is that the same as core shift? I never really understood what that was anyway? Is it a shift right where the casting line is inside the port when the top and bottom may have shifted side to side?

Yeah.

This is bad core shift. The port is not aligned with the valve seat. Picture is from Marcin.

What causes this shift?

I'm guessing worn valve guides which would allow the valve to be misaligned. Therefore it sits off-center and bores out a nice seat for itself.

Or I could be totally wrong.

I believe it has to do with when the head was originaly cast.

Thats pretty bad for a Honda head...
That looks more like something GM would make!
Let me see if I can find some core shift pictures next week....
