Default What oil do you use to break in a brand new built motor?

We just built my friend's K20A and want to break it in on the dyno. But we're still deciding which dino oil to use to break it in with? Just wanted to hear some suggestions from some of you guys on what to use.

I used it myself on a few build ups works like a charm.

I hear from most people to just use the cheapest oil, but if it had to be non-detergent I would use OEM honda.

What does everyone think about this claim? Looks like a lot of high horespower cars break in with synthetic oil now.

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-En....aspx
Myth: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1.
Reality:

You can start using Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:
Aston Martin
Bentley Amage and Bentley GT
Cadillac CTS, XLR, SRX and STS
Chevrolet Corvette
Dodge Viper
Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
Mercedes SLR
Mitsubishi EVO
Pontiac GTO
All Porsche vehicles
One of the myths that surrounds synthetic oils is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. The fact is, current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design the high-performance cars listed above, Mobil 1 can be used starting the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.

i thought all these Non-detergent oil, old wives tales died 20 years ago. If you are building a flat-head Ford or 1955 283 Chevy, use non-detergent oil. If you are building an engine manufactured after 1983, with currant cylinder materials and rings, use the newer oils.

Interesting subject, I have put a lot of thought into this. Here is the problem, you want an oil with a lot of anti wear so that the cams will survive break in without scoring but allow the rings to seat quickly and anti wear is not what you want. So what is the answer fill the engine with ND start the engine with the valve cover off while you pour GM E.O.S on the cam lobes? Might be a hassel but you only have to do it once and might get the best results. Also to break in vtec lobes it is a good idea to only keep the motor in vtec for as short a period as posible to keep the lobes cool and well oiled but do this ten times or so before you blast it. Also I would dump the ND quickly and not use it for a dyno run. Dan

Don't know about all these but I have heard from a local oil guru that yes, gm uses mobil 1 from the start, but the motors are first started on propane.

I also agree with DonF, there is not any cam or ring companys that i know of that recomend non detergent oil. I don't particularly agree but, in fact Total Seal recomends cylinders should be coated with ATF during a build (very high detergent).

We recomend Valvoline 30wt det, change imediately, 500mi, 1000mi, then use whatever you want on all our rebuilds.

Just my 2 cents, and the debate will go on and on....
