I need some help here. Charcoal canister filling up with Liquid Fuel.
Hi, i have a 88 Honda crx. Ever since the day i purchased it i noticed that for some reason the charcoal canister would fill up with fuel, and leak onto the ground.
I removed the canister, and ran a line to a safe location (dont want liquid fuel in the bay).
The line that was filling the canister was the gas tank vent line (the one comming thought the firewall).
What could be some possible causes for this?
I need to get this straightened up since once my car is boosted, i feel i will be getting pulled over more, and cops check for these things, and if im caught w/o it, ill get a nasty $380 fine.
I cant seem to find any relation to when it happens. Temperature, full/empty, driving style.. It just seems to be completely unpredicable. It also kills my gas mileage. Some times it wont happen for a week, sometimes it happens every 10 min.
If i get out of the car, and open the gas cap, it stops immediately.
Now the previous owner told me it recently had a new gas tank, could something have been installed wrong? A pinched line? I can drop the tank to investigate.
I am also aware it has 2 way valve on the tank, which connects with this line, is it possible that this 2 way valve is malfunctioning and not venting gasses?
Any help apreshiated. If i knew more about how the whole system worked then id have a better idea, but unfortunatley i dont
TYIA!

It could be that u are over filling your tank, i ve heard that people who fill up and when the pump clicks continue to top up to the nearest dollar or whatever, it casue the EVAP vent tube to fill up with liquid and not vapour, try not fill up so much and let me know.
No, i do not overfill the tank. I usually only fill it halfway. IT even leaks when its neer empty.
The amount of fuel in the tank dosent matter.
Anyone else??

after driving on a tank of gas, and you remove the gas cap can you hear the pressure releasing (air) when the cap is unscrewed?

I can't remember exactly but since nobody else mentioned it I will. I am pretty sure you need to replace your charcoal canister, I heard about this issue when I was in inspection school about 2 years ago. and even though they did not mention Hondas, we were told that if you have one of these filled with gas then it fails and the part needs to be replaced to pass.
This may not be the case but since it's so easy to do then try it, it may solve your problem.
If I am wrong then sorry I could not help.
