the other day i noticed my car had an intermittent tick at about 3500rpm's. so, i brought it to work the next day let it sit until right before i left and did a valve adjustment. no dice. it sounds like it is coming from the back of the head or even the i/m but that is unlikely. it will sometimes do it at idle and usually makes itself known around 3500rpm's especially under load. the worst part is it seems to go away in vtec. i'm stumped.
the timing belt is tight, and i haven't had a chance to do a compression check yet. that will be tomorow. valve lash is set at .007 intake and .008 exhaust
btw its a b16 with gsr cams

i believe there is a small exhaust leak at the manifold, but the noise seems to be coming from the i/m side. and there is no loss of power.

i'm not sure on that, but i took it out and cleaned it then i blew into it and it seemed to work fine. but i will buy a new one tomorrow when i get to work.
thanks for all the input so far guys. it is greatly appreciated

My car does the same thing never figured it out...it happens sometimes when the car is at idle or if a rev it up to about 3 or 4 grand...let me know the outcome...

if they are bad would the noise be there all the time? or would it just be intermittent? and is there a way to check to see if they are bad?

there under load during vtec so the noise is less noticeable. when they are at rest they have room to make noise extra clearance. its like a lifter that is noisy then when you rev it up and it has appropriate oil pressure its fine.
Same thing happens to me. Non-vtec. Think about this, if you race your car often, chances are that the valves are going to get louder as the engine gets older. And since we drive Hondas, there's a good chance that our cars were raced even before we owned them. My car sees redline once a day or maybe two, but you have to deal with it since you are forcing the valvetrain to its max...

i understand the valve noise, but this is more than valve noise. i've done 3 valve adjustments in the last month. it just gets worse. i'm expletive confused.

i recently had the same ticking problem in my b16. the tick would come at any time during revs to 7000. so i knew something was loose or tapping. i had the head rebuild with new spring, retainers, and cam gears. at first is went awayfor a few 100 miles, but when i changed spark plugs and oil, the tick came back only at idle or around 4g RPM. coincidence? i want to rule out other possible problems before chewing out my local performance shop.

But did you replace the LMA's?
But did you replace the LMA's?
Yup, its your LMA's. Change them and your ticking will go away. Mine would tick during idle. It wouldn't always do it, just some times. Got new ones, problem solved. I'll bet $$$$ its your LMA's. To test them you have to take the valve cover off and press down on the LMA's and see if they come back up without getting stuck. Easiest way to do it is to press down on the center rocker arm and it should come up smoothly.

just a question not to thread jack.
my car ticks at idle and it you rev it up in nuetral it goes away. Under a load it ticks also. its worse when its cold out. is that the LMA's too or just a vlve adjustment? how much to replace them?

you might need to throw a valve adjustment on that bad boy first. I would do that and see if my ticking gets better cause the lost LMA will cost loot and the valve adjustment will cost you just a little time.

all depends on how you drive the car and how long it's been making noise.

not to be a dick but reading>you. if you would have read my first post you would have seen that i just did a valve adjustment on monday and the noise is still there.
