Anyone had problems with leaking axle seals? (91' 1.5 liter)
I'm trying to help a friend who is not mechanically inclined figure out what's likely wrong with his 91 CRX coupe. In my experience, when I've had a tricky problem on my Mazda, forums have been helpful because someone else has usually been there, done that. So I thought I'd ask here to see if you folks know anything about this.
He has had the axle seals replaced twice on this car and one is now leaking again. (at the tranny)
The tech said it could be his axle, but wants $150 just to disassemble and find out. He said it could also be that his differential is just worn out and allowing too much axle play and causing the seal to leak or wear out quickly. So, if it's the diff, then he'll need a new tranny.
Has anyone had a similar problem with repeated leaky seals? Is there any common ailment on CRX's that could cause this problem?
The car has 190K miles on it, and the axles were replaced with rebuilds a year ago or so. There are NO symptoms of bad C/V like clicking, etc.
Also ,any recommendations for rebuilt tranny sources?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Well I am not going to be of much help but my 89 crx DX had that exact same problem. The passenger side ever since I replaced the axle has leaked I have replaced the seal 3 times now and it never looks bad. but it is always **** eyed in there. I think it is a bad axle but that is just my guess. I am not going to screw with it though I have a b18c5 waiting to go in the car so that tranny can just go in the trash.
