Questions for anyone road racing their ek, need help with upgrades
I think my wife is going to let me finally get an ek to be pretty much a race car, at least for things like HPDE's. The last few years I have been exclusively an ep3 guy so I was hoping some of you guys could give me some recommendations on parts upgrades and how approximate prices for these wonderful upgrades.
Brakes - Of course I would love to upgrade to ITR brakes, but then I would have to do a whole hub swap and I dont think that is the way to start off this project and convince my wife that I will keep the costs "reasonable." So tell me what you all are using with the least amount of fade for the least amount of money and what swap do you use to put discs in the rear?
Suspension - I really need help here, I am so not a suspension guru. I would guess I want something adjustable, but am not sure. This will not be a street car aside from driving to events so it can sprung in whatever way is appropriate for the track. Just lookin for the most basic, serviceable setup here.
Tire and wheel size - I am pretty familiar with the different brands and types of rubber out there, but would like to know what sizes you all are using. I would think 15 inch wheels would be about right, but am not sure on tire size.
Which NA swap - This would for sure be for down the road, but I was wondering which swap is the most popular and realible for the ek as far as being used at the track.
Anyone with any other important information for this project please feel free to chime in. This is the first time I have tried to build a car with racing in mind.
Thanks

What EK are you speaking off? Coupe? Hatch? I would think GSR brakes could suit you pretty well. I would run brake ducting to help eliminate brake fade.
Rotors - Autozone - Cheap to replace and hold up well at the track.
Pads - Not too sure. Maybe GT Sports or something more aggresive. Check out cobaltfriction.com They offer pretty good advice. Call them up and speak to them about what you're doing.
I think Ground Control coilovers with Koni Yellow shocks is always a nice way to go. Many people in the racing forum use this setup. You can get requested spring rates with the GC's.
Rim/Tire. I think 15's are good. They can be light and the tire costs are a good bit less than 16's. Are you looking for a track only tire? Or a high performance street tire? Falken Azenis are always a good tire to start with.
NA swap is a tough one. That all depends on how much money you want to spend and you didn't mention that. That can range from a B18C1, B18C5, K20Z1, etc.
I would say be more concerned about getting a roll bar, seat, and suspension. Sway bars, strut bars, springs, shocks.

one thing your gonna need to put more hard work to is gonna have to be your suspension, koni yellow and GC coilovers is perfect but a full suspension like omni power will serve you better, definetly worry about suspension especially if its a hatch is hard to get that light weight rear end to stop bouncin up..
Brakes - i would lean more towards 96 spec ITR brakes(4x114) or GS-R setup. kragen has some good rotors and pads and come w/ a lifetime warranty.
Suspension - i would go with a full suspension (i.e. omni, skunk2, tein, GC w/Koni yellows
Tire and wheel size - 15's are good. with 205 azenis you should get the traction your looking for
Which NA swap - stick with just a b16. very good power and not to expensive
hope this helps

Sorry for not being more definitive, as far as ek I meant a hatch. I can really only work with hatches and liftbacks. I was meant to shop in the EDM/JDM car markets.
Someone has to drop a little info on cages and rollbars for me. For HPDE would I need a whole cage or just a roll bar? How much would this cost, more or less? Would I also want to get a fixed back seat and harness? If so how much am I looking at here?
For tires I was thinking something like Azenis, this car will have to drive to the track so no R compounds at this point.

Would this apply to HPDE?
