Default My first Autocross event. (Cliff notes at bottom)

Competed in my first SCCA Solo II event today at Birmingham race course. All I can say is that it was incredible. The track layout was alot bigger than I expected which made it even cooler and everyone I met was great. Met a Veteran racer as well (been racing since 1974) who walked the track with me a few times and gave me alot of pointers. Anyway with my rear strut tower bar and intake I was put into the STX class, but I really didn't care since I was there to have fun. Well out of about 4-5 cars in my class I placed second and was the fastest of 3 Type-R's and a WRX. The car that won was a Prelude running suspension and other goodies (I believe at least). I cannot believe how well our cars handle stock, it was almost scary that I was running close to some of the Veterans my first time out. In fact I was only one second slower than a experienced WRX driver running R compound tires. I learned to relax pretty quickly and started to get pretty smooth which makes all of the difference. The Veteran driver I met named Russ Ferrel, who won his class with his stock Miata, took me for a fun run. All I have to say is Miata's are handling beasts and are very nuetral feeling. He also showed me that being real smooth is way better. This guy was running only 3 seconds off a prepared M3 and S2000 with a bone stock Miata(except for different front sway bar) on street tires. I am now officially hooked and very excited that I did well. Drag racing completely blows when it comes to this and I doubt I will waste much money on it in the future.

Cliff notes:

Autocrossing is the coolest thing ever created. Met alot of cool people. Ran extremely well and placed 2nd in a class that allows cars with full coilovers and other goodies. Realized that the Integra Type-R is way faster than I ever thought and that the driver means everything.

Welcome to the real world! No offense to any drag racers, but autox delivers a lot more adrenaline pumping car/driver interaction...

Apparently a whole lot. I can't imagine what a professional driver could have done in my car. You will love your car 10 times as much. Just make sure you have good tires.

Please do come out to our event this weekend. All you need to know is that it's at Turner Field on 3/24/02 (Sunday). If you decide to crash a night earlier, we could hook you up with a place to stay.

Where do I pre-register? As far as I know you can count on me to be there. Looks like it might be time to purchase a set of extra rims.

AA - really no need to pre-register at our events. (i've never done it personally, but I'm still a rookie.) I just go in an hour before the scheduled class, pay and run. Let me or Black R know if you'll be stopping by. There should be at least a dozen H-T ers at the event... (Black R, Cosworth, Rated R, Trey, Neo, SPiFF, madhatter, catch22, etc., etc., etc.) Hope to see you this weekend.
