Default Benen Strong Bar Bolts

I've been wanting to add a Benen strong bar in my Gen 3 hatch, but when I removed one of the bolts, the bolt was getting hot and was difficult to unscrew. After removing the bolt, I found it impossible to put it back in. It seems the last time I was rear-ended (never really hard, but I guess hard enough), it caused this damage.

What is the easiest way to line up this hole? Is there something I can just bang from under the car or is this something a machine shop would use a special device to "pull" it out?

You cross threaded the hole in the chassis - you *might* be able to fix it by chasing it with a tap, but from your description I wouldnt count it.

You misinterpreted what I was describing...

There seems to be 2 pieces, one (trunk skin) and whatever it screws into, which is under it. The hole does not line up between these 2 planes, hence making it impossible to get the bolt far enough to thread into the bottom part.

You'll need to take pics - if the bolt was hard to get out, and hot when you removed it (friction) then you chewed up the threads removing it.

ohkay

i'll try to explain

there is teh trunk SKIN....
then under that is the bumper support...it slides into the frame rails and has factory nuts welded on so that those bolts have something to grab....

to get them to line up take off your bumper cover....loosen all the bolts that hold bumper support in then see if it will line/tighten up....

if not you can take bumper support out then chip off old nut that is welded on and put a new one on....

That's what I thought, when I was rear-ended, the body shop did a horrible job... I guess I'll look under there and see if I can bang this into the right spot. I just need to find a bigger hammer... thanks!
