AIr Bags!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys,
I am trying to understand the basic working of SRS/air bag.
If the original air bags bursted out and have to be fixed, do I have to buy all the parts that goes in the SRS assembly?
Suggest a good place to buy SRS part and decent shop where I can get those fixed.
If anyone can explain me how does it works, it will be very helpful

What a relief, I thought you were asking about a long-winded Mother-in-Law
Basically, the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) involves:
1) Rocket Fuel propelled heavy duty balloons (the air bags themselves)
2) A series of Accelerometers (Sensors) that wait in silence for something stupid to happen
3) A brain (SRS Control Module) which make sense of all this
4) Butt sensors. Tells the system when someones' fat a.s is in a seat
5) And a shitload of wiring.
The system is self-diagnosing (SRS lamp stays on intermittently w/first started)
When armed, the system stays dormant until an impact (or event) generates a G force large enough to trigger the sensors. The Control module will select the appropriate speed of deployment and which bags to deploy.
Finding an Aftermarket source for Airbag modules and sensors is going to be extremely tough. Tough enough that it's extremely difficult to find them in Salvage yards (There may be Laws against buying used Airbags...). It's such a problem that there have been Car Theft rings who did nothing more than go around stealing air bags !!!! and selling them to unscrupulous body shops.
For something like this, I'd suggest sticking with OEM. I wouldn't want to put someone I love in front of a questionable Airbag ....

In addition (and in answer to your other question. I believe it is required that after an airbag deployment, not only must the expended Air Bars by replaced (Obviously) but the sensors as well.
In Honda's they are often incorporated in the seat belt retractors.

Correct me if I'm wrong P but I believe the SRS control module (computer) is a one time deal as well. If the airbags blow practically all but the wiring and maybe the sensors too have to be replaced. Out of curiosity I did a search for my 96 and it was close to like $1500 even off ebay (not that I'd trust someone else's hack job).
While we're on the issue. P what's the chances of installing an aftermarket switch to turn off my passenger side airbag. I drive alone 95% of the time and would like to install a switch like most new vehicles have. I'm not an electrical guru and hate wiring diagrams, you think I could talk a dealorship into it?
*Then again I have full coverage so its like what's the point...

What's the point? As far as your insurance coverage is involved; deploy an Airbag and they'll most likely Total the vehicle on you. (Not Nice).
As to your SRS Module question, you may be correct (I think it's Manufacturer specific)(I don't think the Fed Gov has gotten that involved in it yet). Gm only requires the Bags and what they call the sensor pack.
It's an interesting point; I'll have to do some research.
On the Passenger Disable Switch; I think it can legally be done (they are including them in new(er) cars (Right?). I suspect they do nothing more than interrupt the trigger mechanism (wire) to the bag. Of course, you'd want to use a lighted switch so as to indicate the bags status ......
