Default Best D-series motor?

Well, I'll be getting a CRX within a month or so (God willing I can find one). For a while I was looking at a B16, but it's just too expensive, and I'd like to keep my first swap simple.

I want to stick with the D series, but I'm not sure which motor is the best choice. My goal is to build a fun, reliable, naturally aspirated daily driven car. A few bolt ons, and maybe bumping the compression a bit, is as far as I want to go on the engine.

So what motor should I be looking at? What's the difference between the SOHC VTEC and the DOHC ZC? Help me out here.

And if there's already a thread like this please link me, searching for "d series" is a bitch.

id vote d16a6 so you dont have to go obd1, unless you dont mind then go d16z6 (vtec)... another common choice if you want to stay obd0 is the dohc zc.

Damn right!
If you find an Si, you get an A6 to start with. It's a good motor, cheap as hell, decent on gas, and quick enough. If you want to get faster, I think you'd be better off boosting it, you're not getting a hell of a lot more power from a mini me or Z6 swap. A SOHC VTEC ZC is basically a D16Z6, and the DOHC ZC is a nice motor, high revving, drops right in, and supposedly can play with the B16's. I have my CRX's stock A6 I rebuilt, and I love it. If you autocross, use an A6 and you can stay in CSP.

Really? The DOHC ZC is the only one I haven't driven, but I've heard it's basically a high-revver, hence the rough idle, as the cams are made for the top-end.

If you can actually find a ZC that is.

JDM D16 Vtec is marvelous. I have one in my Civic coupe, and one is going into my CRX soon. I can't wait.

The stock 88-91 dohc zc makes it's peak HP at like 6500-6700rpm..I dont know why honda set the rev limit so high on that motor..

EDIT :: Here's a dyno graph of pre obd dohc zc with bolt-ons and 89 integra ecu..

http://www.hmotorsonline.com

The best JDM Motor site around. Call and ask them, because the D16 isn't listed on the site.

They are all out of DOHC ZC's and don't plan on getting anymore.

Dohc ZC.

European "ZC" D16A9, 130hp at 6800rpm and best torque at 5800. Who said it wont like to rev? It doesent go anywhere unless you rev it to 5k.

I didnt say they didn't make high rpm power..I said they dont like to be revved..And they dont..I know so many people that have spun bearings in ZC motor with the stock zc ecu or pm6 ecu..By the way look at the dyno graph I posted,,It makes it peak tq at about 4500-4600rpm and that was with a better ecu, intake, header, and exhaust.
