Default Should i buy a new a tranny or replace synchros?

I have the gsr motor and I believe my third gear synchros are starting to go. I don't have to much experience working with transmissions, besides changing a clutch. I went to the this one website gearspead.com and they sell these carbon coated synchros for around a hundred bucks. I was thinking of getting those and just doing it myself, but the only problem is that I hear it is very hard to get in your tranny. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this before and give me a heads up on the things to expect from it. And the other thing don't tell me I can fix my problem with synchromesh.

if ur going to do this urself aside from some hand tools make sure u have some honda bond, a pair of snap ring pliers, a shop press, a chilton and a lot of time on ur hands.. things get messy when u have a trans apart so take pictures.. and make notes of everything u take apart.. dont loose the detent springs with the little ball too... id suggest practicing on a junk transaxle first its an intiminating job

if you are handy and have decent automotive knowledge i would suggest tackling the tranny yourself, not with a Chiltons manual though, a Helms would do good since it's much more descriptive. i believe that BauleyCivic had a write up regarding work on the tranny, not sure if he was replacing the syncros though, try searching for it because it had tons of pics

Syncros and gears can get expensive.
If you're gonna have to pay someone for labor, you might as well just replace the tranny. It'll be cheaper.

I just debated this myself with my z6 tranny. I ended up buying the whole thing...shipped for $225. You can find good deals on complete trannys.

I have always wanted to mess around with a tranny but have never been able to find someone that wants to donate a broken one. Talking to people that have done it they say it is not that hard but that you need to be very maticulous (sp?). They told me to just get the service manual and follow it step by step and you should be fine. Good luck if you go at it yourself
