So the other day it felt like I lost power steering in the car.... but when I went to drop off the car at the mechanics the power steering felt alrgiht...not the best but a lot better then the night before...BUT a loud noise like a GRRRRRRRRRR would come out of nowhere while driving around 25-40... every so often...sometimes it would be long..about 4 seconds and other times it would just be for a second.

Any ideas?

 

I've heard that the sound you just described was the common sound of a PS pump going bad.

exactly...get a new ps pump dude...

 

i think there was a thread about this last week. same problem, different guy...

 

So mechanic calls me up...tells me nothing seems wrong with the car after he road tested it this morning.... no sounds... no nothing...and the power steering seems perfect. I told him about this forum and it's a highly respectable place to go for info... tell him a few guys said power steering pump might be going bad. He tells me pumps either make a little noise due to the cold which is harmless or they flat out fail. He said they pretty much never just cut out at certain times then work again other times.

 

well you tell him that your ps pump is going bad and to put a new one on there

thats what the problem is dude...think about it, your ps was messing up, then it made weird sounds, and somewhat came back....put a new pump on....

and please do it yourself, that is a very very easy job, all you need is a 12mm wrench, a pair of pliers, and 10 & 12mm sockets and a rachet....you can find a used ps pump on this site if you need to, i even have a few sitting around...
