How long has it been sitting? If it was sitting for a long time the fuel may have just gone bad. My lude was sitting for about a year before I did the H22 swap and it ran like **** until I was able to fill it with some fresh fuel.

Yeah, i guess it could be bad gas. I'm not carb expert, but perhaps the carb jets (a la injector) are clogged? Gah, its been so long since my highschool shop class, i dont remember anything about carbs anymore, sigh. Good luck.

your carb is clogged. what probably happened is that your fuel filter is old, and a big clog of schmutz ended up clogging your main jets. Drain the float bowl, remove the jets, clean 'em w/ carb cleaner, and re-install. make sure you replace the fuel filter, or it'll probably happen again.

it won't start w/out ether because it's running way too lean (i.e. it's not getting enough fuel)

I'm 99% sure I"m right. the only exception, however, could be that your diaphragm has a tear in it. you may want to remove the carb completely and check it out, piece by piece.
