Im helping a friend with his D-series motor build. We have Wiseco pistons(#K543M755) 75.5mm and Tuner Toys rods. The wrist pin wont fit through the small end of the rod which will cost $10 a rod to hone out. But the big problem is the small end of the rod wont fit into the piston. And the engine shop says 60 thousandths (0.060") needs to be removed from each side and that will cost $25 a rod. So just to fix these rods to use them will cost $140 on top of the cost of the rods $225. We coulda got Eagle rods for $300!
We dont have a picture of the problem but I borrowed this picture from Earls thread about Mahle pistons. Its the same exact issue.
Is the rod to blame or the piston?

get a dial caliper and measure the distance of the piston. Then call Wiseco and ask what the spec should be.
Do the same for tuner toys.
Thats what id do....
Hows your car comming along Muckman?

Tuner Toys only has one "D16" connecting rod.
TunerToys doesnt list a phone number only an email form. Does anybody have their phone number?

You got a $200 set of rods and a good set of pistons, i'm gonna go out on a limb and say the problem is with the rods. For what it's worth, i had the same problem with the wristpins not fitting in an eagle rod. Eagle's response was yeah, sometimes you have to hone the rod a bit to get the pins to fit...

lol dont even start with me about Mcquillen Engines. He would probably shave material off the big end then tell me it was my fault because I was annoying him.

Thanks J. Davis.
Ok heres the skinny on the measurements I got from Wiseco and Tuner Toys
Tuner Toys D16 rods
C-C length 5.394"
BE bore 1.890"
BE width .898"
Wrist pin .748"
PE width .925"
Wiseco
Wrist pin .748"
Pin Boss width .917"
So the pin diameter is supposed to be the same but it was not. But its obvious the pin boss width wont work because the rods are too fat. I never thought to ask for the measurements before. I assumed it was a standard width or at least have alot of clearance like my CPs. I checked CP's D16 pistons and their pin boss width is 1.163"

I know TT had problems with small end being too wide on either one set of their rods, or very early ones. I can't find the post concerning it.
I'd be a little annoyed with $100 to machine the small ends of your rods, as that is less than an hour work on a manual mill. I paid $300 to have LS big ends machined to fit D16 crank, block tanked and honed .25mm and decked 0.04", a set of ACL rod bearings, GX pistons fitted to rods, and bottom end assembly by a reputable local machinist.

The shop says its not very hard to do but it would take 2 hours to set up the machine. Maybe we'll look elsewhere.
Do you think we could file the material off ourselves? Or does it absolutely have to be machined off by a shop? I cant image it would affect the balance that much. Its only a D series. lol

I think Pro-Car (off Elmgrove not far from you) has a small mill. I'll give them a call this week and see if its something they could do.

Theres a shop out by you called Sealey's engine service that does really good work. They helped with the reassembly of my head last year when I got it back from another shop an nothing was tightened down at all.

Those are ls rods rather than d 16 rods. Someone thought they could just change the pin size on an ls rod and make a d16 out of it. For the life of me I will never figure out why some people will trust a rod with no history just to save a few dollars.

Muckman - Sorry for the issue with the rods. If you like, you can ship them back to us and we'll either give you a full refund, or apply the entire amount towards a set of Eagles. We'll even sell you the Eagles at our cost, so your extra investment into this is kept at a minimum. Just let us know what you would like to do, and we'll take care of it. eMail is normally the quickest way to contact us, but if you prefer to phone us, 480-225-3326.
Importordomestic - Can you please post that link to where we can buy Eagles for $225 as this is cheaper than we can buy them through our own Eagle distributor. Thanks.
earl - In all honesty, these rods do have a history, albeit not a perfect history. We have been selling them for over a year now, and aside from the initial batch issues, this is the first fitment problem we have had. A years worth of customers have had good results with these rods, and saved ~30% over brand name rods. I cannot profess to know every customer's experience with our rods, but we have yet to have any returns for mechanical or manufacturing failures.
All - It is TunerToys goal to provide you guys with excellent parts at the cheapest price possible. Not everyone has a bucket of cash laying around to throw at top dollar parts. That said, sometimes there are bound to be problems, and we do our best to handle those problems in the best manner tha we can.
As much as I hate to hear that there is a problem with our rods and Wisecos pistons, it does provide us with better information than we had before. We can now add this information to our product description, so that others will not have the same problems. We'll also research Wiseco, CP, and other manufacturers specifications for their pistons, to see if there are other fitment issues. This additional information will help us to make a better product for you guys who don't have extra throw money around.
