hey stuck at the airport so i'd thought i'd see if i can isolate a problem i'm experiencing on my '95 mb1.

it has 4 wheel discs + abs. I believe the pads are rubbing on the discs all the time. my wheels do not rotate as well backwards as they do forwards when on jack stands and when you drive in a very tight circle you can hear a scraping noise as if something metallic is dragging on the disc. i can tell the car doesn't rollback when it should by the way other cars do around me.

I took it into a shop earlier and got new rear discs and pads and had the calipers dissassembled and lubricated (the shop said that they didn't know what was causing the dragging as the pistons were moving freely) but the lubrication definitely fixed a lot of the problems i was having (the discs would get extremely hot despite no use of the brakes) but there's certainly something still wrong.

any ideas? or is this just entirely too vague?

 

To start off with the pads always touch the rotors. You should check between the dust shield and the rotor for foreign objects. I once caught a rock stuck there during an autox run. It made an awful screeching sound and my rotor was glowing red. Since it's still happening after the rear brake work was done, you'll obviously want to check the front.

 

thanks for the response. The front calipers were lubricated at the same time and checked. I realize the pads should be touching but I have a feeling they are somehow putting pressure against the disc especially under hard left/right turns. I haven't dissected a disc brake fully (only replaced 1 pad) but are the pads able to shift around a bit?

 

It sounds like some brake pad adhesive needs to be put on the back of them. It helps hold them in place.

 

did you do any brake upgrades or are these the factory rotors/calipers?
