oveheating and no cabin heat problem now leads to car not starting
I'm back! Brought my car to my dad's place Thursday night. Yesterday my dad was able to swap out the thermostat for a new one. Refilled and bled the rad. Lower hose was still cold and still no heat. He decides to remove the upper hose from the rad, fill it with coolant until it came out, put it back on the rad (I think), closed the valve to the heater core and then start the car up. Lower hose warmed up a bit after idling but then the engine shut down. No coolant in oil and vice versa. Seem to be burning oil as well. Water pump was replaced late last summer. Car will not start now.
From searching again on H-T, my overheating and no heat in the cabin problems could be the result of:
1. bad water pump (don't think so)
2. bad thermostat (don't think so)
3. blown headgasket (maybe but unsure)
4. block in coolant flow (maybe)
What could be the problem causing the car to not start? I'm dumbfounded. As you can tell I'm not the author of the Helms manual, but I'm not mechanically inept either. Anyways...post up if you can help me out. I'm tired of driving my dad's 92 4 door civic around and I'm sure he wants it back too! A friend of his is hopefully showing up there tomorrow to help diagnose and fix the problem but I thought I'd give them some suggestions.
Thanks in advance!

It's cranking but not starting. I'll call my dad tomorrow to see if he remembered the ground to the thermostat housing.

From what I've read, it's possible to install them in backwards. I'll double check on that too!
Thanks for the replies!
