Default WTF syncromesh = [

Ok, I've noticed when shifting gears that some times it would grind or catch, nothing to major and didnt happen all the time.

All this syncromesh talk made it sound like god so I decided, "What the hell?" and changed my MTF.

Well, I noticed that is was much thicker than the MTF fluid coming out but then again, we are talking about the all mighty 'syncromesh' so I figured I should ignore my gut feeling that this was going to rob some HP.

Well after a full tank I ended up getting about 270miles to my tank when my average is 350... and currently im sitting at a 140 half way mark.

My question is has anybody else notice or knew about this and never discussed it or is the 'syncromesh' not at fault.

If my next total miles to the tank is under 300 I am going to change it back to honda MTF.

This is EXACTLY why I hate when people say recommend stuff with out noting some possible problems that maybe encounter with stuff, like extremely light flywheels. Even if you dont think the issues with something are a big deal, they still exist.

There is no way on earth your tranny fluid change caused you to lose a 100 miles a tank unless you replaced tranny fluid with grease.

I made the switch to get rid of my 3rd gear grind and couldn't be happier. I suggest you start looking elsewhere for your mileage man.

Are you certain you used the correct fluid?

When I refilled my trans with Synchromesh Friction Modified, I noted that the fluid seemed thinner than usual to me.

I have never had issues with fuel economy with Synchromesh FM. I've averaged 30mpg with my '00 Civic Si, and 37mpg with my '91 CRX Si.

Are you sure you used the right stuff?

I'm guessing you didn't use the Friction Modified since you didn't specify that. If you read anything about SyncroMesh on this site, you'll notice that everybody uses the Friction Modifie (SyncroMesh FM) formula. I was running the FM on my EJ2 and was getting 46 mpg. It has nothing to do with your tranny fluid unless like what somebody else said, you put grease in your tranny.

synchromesh worked for me... it almost seemed to doctor my trans up! switched back to old 10-30 and only has a slight grind into 5th gear and rear high rpms

back on topic, changing tranny fluid shouldn't affect gas mileage

I hope you didn't put in the wrong fluid in ex. 80w90 I'm 95% sure you put the wrong type of synchromesh in. And also for the friction modified **** it doesn't matter if its regular synchromesh or the FM they both work the same. I myself use the regular synchromesh and couldn't be any happier. FYI the part number should be #12345349 unless they chaged it but it doesn't hurt to ask.

yes.. they sell the generic brand of syncromesh there.. it works the same, just cheaper.

I just put a new trans in my car and decided to use syncromesh (i used non friction modified) instead of Honda MTF. So far I only have about 25 miles on my new setup, and I do notice that 5th gear grinds a bit.. but Im not sure if its the fluid or if my new trans (that the seller SWORE was perfect) has a bad syncro.

Im going to go about another 100 miles or so and see what happens.. if its the same then im changing to MTF.

Ill keep you posted when/if I make the change.

That's what some use, but it's honestly better not to. It works, but not quite as well.

I used the friction modifed GM synchromesh in an old tranny that was originally grinding three out of five gears due to a mechanic putting in 10w30 motor oil as transmission fluid.

After the fluid change, I had to TRY to grind a gear. Fast up shifting in the same transmission after the fluid change resulted in an ever so slight tink when I shifted into third gear. (Third gear synchro was initially the worst)

Also, absolutely NO mpg problems or changes resulted due to the transmission fluid change.
