Axle Seized in the Hub
Hey guys I got a problem. Few days ago my cv's started clicking. So I bought a set of remanufactured driveshafts and took em to my boy at Honda to get him to slap them in.
So he gets the passenger side in no problem. He couldn't do the drivers side because he said it was seized into the hub. He tried to hit it with penetrating oil and a little heat, and hit it with an air hammer, but it wouldnt budge. He told me to score a new knuckle and he would do it that way.
I have to leave for Canada Tuesday, and can't find a knuckle that fast. Anyone have any tips on getting this thing out? I m going to try and get it out Sunday. I want to lube it up real good in the morning and start cracking on it in the afternoon. I have a bronze hammer and an ll aluminum one. What do you guys suggest?

PB Blaster is your best friend (yellow/white can). I would soak it with that stuff a couple times a day for maybe a week (from both sides, take the nut off and spray from that side and the back) and then beat that thing with a hammer till it lets go. Not the threads on the CV so much, I mean beat the housing and everything to help it break loose, leave the nut on so you don't beat the threads to death.
take the one end out of the tranny.then take some pb blaster spray it on the then ttake a deep weld socket with hammer aand hit it out.i think ehtier a 14 or 15 will work.thats what i used.

Are you sure? Here in Sacramento, CA, you find these cars all over the place at the local Pick-And-Pulls. And knuckles are plentiful. They can't be THAT rare where you live.

lol good luck, when i did my ZC swap i had the same problem
i still have that axle and its still attached to the knuckle on the side of my garage, i just bought a new knuckle and put it in with the new axle
by beating on the axle alot you will destroy the wheel bearing, it turned fine when we went to pull the axle, after beating on it for 2 days it doesnt turn for ****, so if it doesnt come out withing a couple hours you might want to start looking for knuckles or take the axle and knuckle to a shop and have them use a hyrdrolic press

Just giv'er her a hammer and some lube to break her free. I've had some stubborn shafts but a few pounds of the hammer and they came free. If you are replacing the shaft, don't worry about ruining the treads. Take the nut off and beat her up.

i would stay away from hitting it with a hammer, i can just see it now. your going to pound it to china, and mushroom the tip, and it'll never come out of the spindle and you'll really be screwed.
if i were you, ide spray lube penetrate in there, let it soak in, and try and tap it out WITH the axle nut on! so you don't mushroom the tip. if that doens't work, you will need some type of a puller, or you could take it all off, and take it into a machine shop, and they can press it off.

the autozone puller (the one that bolts to the hub and screws into the axle) seems like it would have to work. it will mess up the end of the axle, but it will come out fine and you are throwing out the axle anyway.
i had the same problem with my da integra but i was swaping the motor and tranny but you should be able to pull your knuckle off and beat the crap out of it till it comes out. but dont miss or you will end up replacing a lug bolt.

prolly just as fast as anything else, assuming your guy has a press. if not most places will do it for free. aim for something over 20 ton. it'll pop. i'll admit i've never owned a rusty honda, but i've had more than my share of rusty **** in the garage. i'm not sure what it is like where you live, but if you go hunting for a shop look for a place that services large machinery (farm stores are great) as they have big presses and are usually pretty nice about things.
p.s.- hey tom, what's up? it's greg from rsca.

youre going to end up needing a new knuckle! if you use much of a press or beat on it anymore you will damage the wheel bearing. i'd use a piece of wood and a hammer on the end of the axle only after letting it sit with pb blaster for several hours!
