Default Question about Honda Automatic Tranny Reliability - 91 Civic Dx

My father-in-law is looking at a little beater at the moment. It is a 91' Honda Civic DX with 114,000 miles with a descent body for $1000. Has new CV Joints and runs great. My question is, how are honda Automatics?? We both aren't too crazy about autos but his Daily Driver is a Rear wheel drive truck and he wants something to drive to work in the winter time for cheap. Also, I'm guessing these are cheap to work on. I have attched some Pix. Good deal or not?? Passenger side has a good dent from a small fender bender and wheel arches have a bit of rust.

They are asking $1200 which is exactly the KBB value for the car, but he has talked them down to $1000. Looks like a good deal to me but I thought some of you guys would know better than I do.

Looks nice to me too...well, better than my 91 hatch-bucket.

I can't imagine converting to manual would be that difficult if one were so inclined.

Parts for these cars are cheap and readily available.

Very easy to work on!

Doesn't look too rusty, which is a bonus. I think it needs a home and a caring owner.

I'd ask them to knock some more off the price for the bumper damage, no doubt the $1200 figure came from a 'good' estimate versus 'fair'..

( I know this doesn't specifically answer your question, but I enjoy owning mine, hasn't given me any trouble )

It answers it well enough. I just wanted to know how these are to work on. Cheap and easy is what I wanted to hear. My ITR is easy to work on so I figured these would be too.

Thanks,

Not only are they easy to work on, the autos are bullet proof. Can't break a trans with no hp.

Damn right, and my civic auto feels like about half of that makes it to the wheels. Damn slushboxes.

The same design was used on the later civics with 125hp \ / with no problems, so I figure it's lifespan for the B2 cars will be nearly infinite.

On a related note, once I get my mpfi swap done, I will be testing the power handling capability of the auto trans... with nitrous.
