my car died last night... timing belt?
i was just getting off the exit from 101 north last night and my car just died on me out of nowhere. i got out and pushed my shyt out of the road and popped the hood. car tried to start but couldnt and i thought it was the timing belt. the guy who towed my car said that's exactly what it sounds like cuz he hears it all the time. so i got my car towed back to the house and i want to kno what to look for as far as further damage after the belt breaking... good place to get new belt and water pump too??
I really hope that's not what happened bro. Best way to check, take the valve cover off and look at the belt, if it's still there you have different problems. As for the damage, probably bent valves and or destroyed pistons, won't really know until you take the head off though. I'd just get the belt and pump from Honda, cause it seems like other places charge just as much anyway. Good luck man.
i was reading somewhere that if your timing belt breaks while driving it will cause the internals to grind bent etc... and bring me to a quick stop but that didnt happen. i wasnt even goin faster than 20 cuz i was just gettin off the freeway and maybe 200-300 feet from a light. could it be that even if it broke that it didnt cause much damage or atleast something that can still be fixed since i wasnt doin much when it happened. any other ideas that could have caused the car to die like that other than the timing belt?
It is possible that it didn't do any damage, but if it did you should go out and get a lottery ticket tonight too cause you're on a serious lucky streak. Guess a lot of things could have happened, electrical or electronic issue, maybe a sudden lack of fuel.....um.......at a loss for much of anything else though.

this happened to me just 3 days after i bought my integra this past june... its a 99 ls and had 83000 miles at the time... i was at a traffic light and when it turned green, my car started shaking and then it just died... i was like "crap! whattha?! man i got ripped off!" i would try to turn it back on but it would just make this noise (i forgot how it went) but it wouldnt crank. i was stuck on da road and had to push it to da side so my cuzin (mr.fix-it) came and checked it out. after several checks, he noticed the timing belt was kinda funny... he noticed it was loose...he would tighten it, but it just wouldnt stay... then he noticed the reason it wouldnt stay was cuz my timing belt was busted... some of the teeth of the belt broke and thats why it wouldnt stay tight. he said it was probably never changed... so i got it replaced along with 3 other belts and also the water pump... and ever since then its been running perfect
good luck to you.
good luck to you.

this depends on the engine....ls engines have a looser valve to piston clearance that say the gsr engines(with vtec engaged) if anything you fucked it up when you tried to start it. if my car ever shuts off the first thing before i do anything is check and make sure the timing belts fine. its not hard to check.

Actually I'd say that replacing a timing belt is a Bitch! There is a bunch of **** in the way of that belt. Also, just because you belt broke it doesn't mean your whole motor is shot. My belt went a month ago. I took the head off to check everything out and it was all fine and I was going 80 mph on the interstate. New head gasket $40, new belt $40, a few bandages from working on the car $4.00, car running again....Priceless! G/L with the fix
if its ur timing belt.. you may as well sell ur car..
honda engines are interference engines.. which means.. the pistons CAN hit the valves if allowed to..
the timing belt snapping allows this to happen. so most likely if your belt snapped.. then ur valves are bent.
check the right side of the engine.. are any of the belts spinning? you might have to take your splash guard off which is a lot of labor.. ~_~

well i wanna say thanks for all you guys tryin to get back at me n tryin to help out. i was at the shop all morning taking off the head and checking everything out. It turns out the belt didnt snap but it lost 15 teeth all together. 1 snapped off in the middle of nowhere and about 10 notches later theres a good 14 teeth in a row that are missing. i had to come home before it was done cuz there were some other cars that had to be finished. well my buddy calls me and says that he put in a new belt and everything is ok but the car threw a few codes.
P0303 No. 3 Cylinder Misfire
P0304 No. 4 Cylinder Misfire

if everythin is ok why would i be throwin those codes??? is this whole thing gonna bite me in the *** in the future if i keep this motor? i keep hearing people say it might not be worth it to invest a lot of money into this one after what happened. let me know what you guys think....

i survived a timing belt snapping in september and im here to tell you there is hope,
plus it helped that i had lower compression piston too, so i missed hitting the head that hard
in my picture is how it looked when i popped the hood

Dont be so quick to judge.
I've snapped my belt on the highway a few months back. Pulled the head out and everything was fine, no damage anywhere. I have NOT pull the valves out yet because during that time a friend of mine was selling a dirt cheap head and i bought that instead. As of now its sitting in the garage.
I've know a few who have experience the same problem with their belt snap which resulted in no damage what so ever.
Good luck with your fix.
It'll be a nice smooth fix if you could do the fix yourself but if you're having a shop do it, the money could be a heartache.
