question about rack and pinion
Where is it leaking from?
From the tie rods?.........
You can do it yourself, if you know what you're doing.
If you're going to replace the gearbox - replace the tie rods also. Oh, and good luck - i personally would take it to a shop - because it takes a lot of time - -and i don't have a lift.
If its leaking out of one of the power steering hoses, just tighten those up. If its leaking out of the inner boot-type things, then you need to replace it.
How many miles do you have on your lude? I've never known anyone that needed to replace their gearbox. If you do it yourself, make sure you clean the input from the steering column.

I am in the same situation. I think the end rack set has a broken seal or something.
Its leaking out of the right hand side and the boot is torn really bad. It doesnt leak all the time.

Oh yeah - well replace that bitch
- if i were you, i'd take it to a small independently owned shop. I have a guy here in indianapolis that does my parents work - he's good. If you take it to a dealership, you'll be charged out the *** - mostly labor.
Buy the gearbox and have someone put it on for you if you don't know.
Here's my take on things - if you do it yourself, you'll learn so much. If you think about it, its just like building with legos. You take something apart - then you'll know where to put it back. There's nothing really special about it. I say, give it a shot. Take pictures whiel you're doing it. Take your time. If you have questions, ask us. Once you change it, yoou'll feel like a million bucks.
I bought an impact screwdriver yesterday for $20 and i'm feeling like a million and 1 bucks.
