My Oil Pressure gauge line broke pics shortly
I'm driving to work this morning, and I'm sitting at the light, and all of the sudden a heavy stream of oil starts coming out of my gauge pod. There is nothing I can do since i'm 1 minute from work and I don't want to be late so I make my left turn and the steady stream of oil shifts and pours all over my leg. GREAT! now I have to sit in a cubicle all day smelling like Quaker State 10W30 synthetic oil. LOL @ my misfortune.
I did some research on H-T before and figured no one else ever had problems with mechanical oil gauges before so i should be fine. I don't think I want a mechanical water temperature gauge after this, because that would have hurt.
My question is do you run mechanical or electrical gauges in your car? What is your setup braided steel, plastic tubing?
I'll post pics when I get home.

usually mechanical gauges are alot more accurate then electronic, make sure to seal your fittings with teflon tape, what kind of line did you have or where was it leaking from, the actual gauge itself?

Yes I did seal the fitting with teflon tape at both ends. It was the plastic tubing kind. I think im going to switch to braided steel lines now.

ya the plastic tubing is air comp hose like whats used for boost gauges and stuff too, i know theres supposed to be a small brass nipple that slides onto the hose also and kinda seals the flarred fittings, but ya id look into something different if that seems to be the problem.
The mechanical water temp doesn't bring the coolant to the gauge, it uses an ether-filled capillary line with a bulb on the end. The ether expands with heat and creates the pressure that moves the needle. Just FYI.
Yeah the line is kinked right before the brass fitting and it was spraying oil EVERYWHERE.
My carpet has oil puddles bigger then the exxon valdez. The panels, dash, seat windshield, cluster hood, door window, A pillar, A pillar pod, and the door jam are all soaked in oil.
I am looking into braided hose now.

The line was kinked right before the brass fitting and that is where the oil started leaking from. I had 2 quarts of spare oil in my car, and I wasn't far from my house, at the time so I was lucky.
Motor is ok, no spun bearings abnormal noises etc. Oil pressure guage has a clog in the line now so i'm replacing it with braided steel line. Used the shop vac, lots of carpet cleaner, armor all, and febreeze to get it back to normal.

I'd say its a close call between these 2 disasters.

mechanical are much better but you should have known better and ran braided line, that cheap plastic line is crap a lil rubbin from vibration and you saw what happens, mechanical water temp gauges dont bring water inside

Yeah i'm thinking about getting an ebay carpet kit. I hear it takes alot of modifying to get it to fit right, but it will be better then what it is now.
I was sucking oil out of the carpet with the shop vac for an hour. I used lots of armor all, oxi magic, and febreeze.

i got aftermarket carpet and it sucks. its not long enough on the sides to fit under the sill plates.. and you have to cut where the shifter and e-brake goes. and you cant return the carpet after its been cut.. but u cant tell it wont fit until its cut and layed down in the car! its a lose - lose situation.
now u know why those old domestic guys put all their gauges on the hood...i always thought an ef would look sick with gauges like that...but i know if i do it sum hater around here will either jack it or break it

Its a little diffrent.
Water Temp guages use a Solid brass line, Brass conducts heat like woha. all it is doing is running heat thru the entire line all the way to the guage.
