my SIR wheels are polished,
dont use a ball, use a rotary polisher - get as much contact as you can, i used a dremel with a soft brush and i had so much swirls!
u dont have to use so much polish either, just make sure u add some water on it, until the whole rim becomes black then wipe off
it should turn out good!
keep it up!

did you strip off the clearcoat?
And I can see some fine lines in it, shouldnt be there after 1000. Go back a few levels, and then keep going, i'd stop at 1600 or so and then step up to the polish. I used aluminum polish and it worked great.

I would like to go with finer grit than that to remove any and all of the fine swirls left in the metal but the local paint shop doesn't carry anything finer than 2500 grit. Does anyone know where I could order some finer sandpaper?

are you wet sanding? because if you are, you shouldn't getting so much fine lines, get it done right now or you'll have to come back later down the line to finish it off.
do 1500 and 2000. use rubbing compound followed by mothers billet polish ($13 stuff not $4)
use a buffing wheel for the polish. heres my polished blades
wetsanding should be done too, will help

Actually, he did it the right way. He was showing what he did to get results, and asked a viable question that the OP should be asking right now to get finer paper to be able to finish this right.
Strip off clearcoat: I used aircraft remover and it removed it very easily. may have to do touch ups to get everything off.
Wetsand- keep the damned thing wet, wash it off every time you've done a section, redip, change paper frequently (every 3 or 4 dips).
Start with 220-400-600-800-1000-1200-1400-1500-2000. Then I used aluminum polish followed up by 3m rubbing compound. Came out like a mirror.
Then all you have to do is find a way to keep it like that...

heres what i did:
1.) Sandlbast
2.)wet sand with 200/400/800/1000/1500/2000
3.) rub on some rubbing compound i used 3m fine grit
4.) rub on some mother incredible billet (the $13 stuff works TONS better than the $3 stuff)
( i used a loose cotton wheel for the polishing compound, it turned out alot better than doing it by hand)
