There is no way you could use your 88 civic valve cover on a D16Z6. What intake manifold do you have in your car? I belive the only way you would be able to pass is if you convert to OBD1 with a STOCK not chipped P28, 4 wire O2 sensor, D16Z6 intake manifold. Make sure that your dc header and AEM intake have the carb number for your engine (D16Z6). Other than that I don't see why you shouldn't be able to pass it, Good Luck.

you can put a D16y5 vc(no vtec) valve cover on a D16y8 (vtec)
but the d15b (no vtec) vc is different than the D16yx (no vtec)

But he has a d16z6 and the spark plug holes are toward the front on the valve cover and he says he has valve cover from a 88 hatch so its either a d16a6 or d15b1/2..and the spark plugs are towrds the rear of the motor on these motors..

Although I normally push for having the car Ref'd, this is what I'd recommend you try;
Go to a normal smog station and tell them that you had the engine replaced due to the original engine wearing out. Pretend that you just paid to have it done and as a result don't really know all the specifics. Ask them to do a "pre-check" to see if it's within the allowables. Then just sit back and see what they say. They may not make a big issue about it.
If they do say that you have to go to the Ref, then just do it. It's not all that bad!! (I've got a ref'd B18c in my 89)
All smog related items will have to be per the engine. I don't think the AEM intake is EO'd. The DC Sport header may be.

I say go for the D16Z6 valve cover WITHOUT the vtec lettering and u should be OK. I know a few people who have gone this route and not had a problem. AEM intake should have a CARB/EO number (almost all of them do, except for the "hybrid" intake). The DC should have it too.
im not sure that its a valve cover from an 88 all i know it doesnt say vtec on it....intake and header do have carbs....im running a chipped p28 would that be a problem???
Your valve cover is not off a 88, its the one i was referring to. Certain Z6 valve covers came without the VTEC lettering. I would try and find a stock P28, although u might still pass with the chipped one. I wouldnt risk it though, just find a stock one.

Definately put the air box back on there. Then follow Wes V's advice except don't say anything to the smogger. Some places don't read the block stamp or don't care since it's still a sohc. Here in San Jose I just took my cerex with a z6 to a local place several times before I brought down my NOx and they smogged over and over it and never said anything about it being tampered.
Also that's the valve cover u wanna have

If he owns one then yea all it deals with is the visual part and wont affect the sniffer one bit.
