Default K in your Rex? Keep your cluster!

Ever since we started researching the K swap for a customer project, everyone has been telling us that a cluster swap would be required... well, not one to buck trends completely, we did decide to investigate it a bit more. Well, after a bit of fiddling and looking around, we figured out that if you use the cable VSS from the stock single-cam tranny (in this case a D16A6 Si tranny out of a 90 Si), you can make the cable VSS work... so you don't have to go buy an expensive cluster, and try to figure out the wiring

Picture showing the cable VSS installed in the K20A tranny

The only modification you have to do, is to drill a new hole in the SOHC VSS moutning bracket as shown

Also, the hole in the SOHC uses a 10mm bolt... in the K, it uses a 12mm bolt. So the hole has to be made big enough for that.

Here are the two VSS's side-by-side. The SOHC is a tad bit shorter, but the gears engage just fine, and its worked so far here.

You also have to use a short 12mm, not a longer one. The one we are using here is the shorter of the two 12mm bolts

All bolted up and ready to party!

Anyway, just thought we'd pass along this bit of tech info for all you K-Rexers out there if you don't already know about it Hope it helps some in your quest for powah!

good work! kinda like my H22 swap in my crx you are able to get away taking the hole elec. vss unit out of the hydro h22 tranny and replace the hole unit with the D series you just need to make a new longer tab like you did

are the gears identical?

If one smaller it would affect the speedometer.
Is the Speedometer correct?

Yep, they are... diameter and tooth count is the same, as well as pitch. The only difference is the physical height of the gear, as seen in the picture. But the shorter D gear engages nicely on the diff ring.

Won't work.. the electronic VSS sends a signal to make the s2k cluster work. Search h-t for s2k clusters on the EF forum and you'll see there is a LOT of work to get it working correctly in our cars. Easiest to stick with a cable driven or something that doesn't requre a different pulse to make the speedo work. Of course.. easiest isn't always best

I don't know the subject as well as he does. I remeber him saying there is a really easy way to get this to work.

Ya, I hate myself! I sold my edm vt cluster allready! Bah! I totally looked at my vss, then at the k one, and said... HMMMM But being in a rush, and no time for r&d I just converted to elec vss and ran the SHITTY ASSZ jdm cluster! Man... I hate it!

PS, as mentioned before its very easy to convert to a electronic vss for any of the newer style clusters
