Default In need of some gas cup info...

I am in need of some info...

First of all, I am in need of a gas cup and I'm not really sure what I need to buy. I am using a 1/16" tun/rod, and am only welding sch 40 stainless. Do I need a "lense" as well, or just the ceramic cup?

While were at it, we should make this into a kind of informative thread on gas cups in general. I've noticed there are many different shapes, and sizes and I have absolutely no idea why.

What the hell makes a "gas cup" a gas cup anyways? Why is it so important that I use one of these instead of just the standard cups that came with my maxstar?

Any info would be great!

Are you talking about a gas lens?

A gas lens has a screen built into the collet body that smooths the flow of gas out through the nozzle. The nozzle size is dictated by tungsten size, gas flow rate, etc. A standard collet uses 3 or 4 holes drilled on either side of the collet body, this causes the gas to kinda tumble out of the nozzle, which works fine for most things.

Standard collet on the left, gas lens on the right.

I have no idea what I'm talking about lol...I was just told that I should get a gas cup for the stuff that I'm welding. What that entails, looks like, means, I have no idea.

Sup mang. Well I actually already started hehe. I just need more practice. I laid down some pretty good welds, but they were just black as hell. It would still be great for him to show me though. I don't know when though cause I have this upper respitory virus. ****** blows. My dad and brother have been sick for like 3 weeks. I've only had it for maybe 5 days.

I had a virus for 6 months before, could not get all the **** out of my lungs.

Anyways, when you buy a gas lense, you also need to buy gas cups right ? Do you need to buy another collet or does that come with the lense ?

Damn, if I have this virus for 6 months I'm going to kill myself...

Yeah, the gas cup has to fit over the lense, so you have to get the one that fits. From what I've seen, all the collets are the same, except for the size of the inner bore.

This is what I bought:

- Gas cup seat
- 1/16" Collet
- Gas Lens
- Gas cup (I bought a 6, and an 8)

I bought both medium and large versions so I have something to compare too.

Coo thanks for the pics.

I'm wondering if anyone has done a fair comparison with the gas lense/cup and just the regular collet, and what differences you've noticed?

I'll try and get before and after pics of my welds with this. Assuming my camera still works.
