how can i tell the difference between an obd ii and an obd i ecu

i have a jdm gsr ecu that won't connect to the scanner to pass inspection. My buddy has a gsr in his civc and i want to borrow his ecu for my inspection, i just want to make sure that it is obd ii and not obd i.

Is there anyway to tell from the out side of it?? Thanks

 

obd 1 & obd2 plugs are different, they will not plug into each other
