b18b frankenstein...
ok i can get a b18b for SUPER cheap... i got a few questions. i did search, but i couldn't find a complete answer for my questions.. my car will be a daily driver/and used for long trips...so here they are:
head - which should i swap on, the b18 series vtec, or the b16? and what kind of HP gain am i looking at over stock? (142 hp)
transmission... i know the tranny for these is a long one....so which tranny would be best? will the b16 tranny fit on? what all are available?
and where can i find a link that covers the head swap on this engine?
thanks all!

hmm....let me read....then re-read, and then read again...LoL..jp
anyways...to answer some questions
1. For the head, Both heads will work, but you have to rember then need maching before they can be mated to the LS block, my opinion on which one you should get, I'd say get whatever one you can get your hands on. I actually have a B16 one for sale
2. The tranny on the LS is horrible....i'd swap it out for any other B series trans other then the LS. I had a B16 and a GSR trans on my B18b civic and it was actually pretty satisfying for a while.
3. There are plenty of threads right here on H-T, Search LS/Vtec, or frankenstein motor, but i'm sure you'll find what your looking for by putting int Ls vtec
I wish you luck on the Frank motor...i have yet to try it...before you go and do the head swap, if your picking up that motor for so dirt cheap you might want to tune it up first and make sure your not modding a worthless motor....just my .02

i cannot find a good guide to the head setup/swap for the ls... anyone have a link on how to properly swap in a vtec head? does it need tuning? if so.. how because there is no dyno in this state lol
as an lsv owner, id like to congradulate you on your choice to go ls/vtec...
i went with the b16 head, it is said that the b16 head has better air flow, now if that is true or not i will most likely never know...
the b18b might have 140 to the crank, but definately not to the wheels, mine dyno'd at 126 w/ i/h/e... after the lsv conversion i dyno'd at 169.
just take it to shop that has built a reputation on lsv builds and put the right amount of money into it. dont penny pinch on it because you will regret it.
get a b16 or gsr tranny... trust me when i say that the ls is tooooo long geared...
i use mine as a daily driver as well, and my daily drive is about 120 miles round trip.
so in short, do it and do it right the first time.

i read ir there is some good info there
do i use the same ECU as the head im using?
what about the axles?
and last, why do i need to run new oil lines..is the vtec head not a direct bolt on?

no you will not use the ecu from the ls. you will need a b16 ecu or maybe others work. also if your axles are in good shape they will do just fine
which axles? the ones off my civic? or do you mean the ls axles? and if i use a GSR head will the GSR ecu work fine?
thanks for the help guys

o yea your going to need an ls/vtec conversion kit, vtec water pump and oil pumpso you will need the vtec timing belt. id use a block girdle to if your going to turbo it. arp main and head bolts a+. good luck
You need to learn how to search here, seriously. This has been covered 12938703984702398 times before. Go to the search button, select "archive", then type in LSVTEC. You should get 927 results. Somewhere in there you'll have some good info. If you want to narrow it down, select the All-motor forum from the "Forum" tab. I'm assuming you're a noob, and thus don't know how to search well. The "archive" part is the key, as most of the information is still pertinent, and there's TONS of it.
You really should do something about tuning if you plan on doing this. It is NOT just a throw-the-head-on-and-lets-boogie kind of deal. If you don't have a place that can do that for you, leave it stock, put on a different tranny (B16 or GSR, either will work with that engine) and leave it at that. Then you can use stock LS axles, stock ECU, and have no worries.
Not as a personal criticism or anything, but it sounds like you have a lot to learn before you go doing something like LS/VTEC all on your own.

ok.....why can't i do the swap exactly?
who said anything about turbo?
and i know there is another way to tune it, thats why i was asking what an alternative method would be...
i've read up on that web link, and it does not seem hard at all.
and i did search.. maybe i just forgot to click the archive link

NO, not just timing. There is no factory Honda ECU that was meant for that particular engine. Thus, you need a custom engine tune. Sure, there are some ECUs that would kind of work, but not very well. That means you need some kind of fuel management. Your cheapest, technically simplest option would be VAFC. Your next option would be Uberdata or Crome, then Hondata. I'm not positive, but I have a feeling VAFC couldn't really cut it.
The actual headswapping part isn't physically that difficult, and requires minimum, if any machining (sometimes the dowel pins don't fit quite right, depending on the head, block, and kit used). The tuning is really the big thing, as your stock LS will run better, get better gas mileage, and last much longer than a very poorly tuned or completely untuned LS/VTEC. Consequently, if you are unable to get that kind of tuning, don't do it.

so you made 182 on a stock ls block.... what setup are you running, before turbo...???

i think you might have it all wrong... im pretty sure that he is not trying to do it himself, i think he is just trying to be a little more informed about the build...its just his choice of words and composition that make it sound like he is going to attempt it himself.
and you cant always find what your looking for when you search...sure there might be 1000 threads on lsvtec but they all seem to have the same kind of people in then posting nothing more than "do a search". before i did my lsv i was also looking for info and it took me a long time to finally find a thread that had some useful info.
my suggestion is to take it to a shop, tell them what you want, and give them money....
