My '91 Accord seems to have a loose brake master cylinder lid. From the looks of it, it is not meant to tighten securely. How exactly does the lid seal to prevent air from making it in? Or do I truly have a loose lid.

 

It only turns like a 1/4 turn or something. There are two small prongs on the outside of the lid that slide into a groove on the outside of the resivour pulling the lid down tight and locking into place. It should be fairly snug/secure.

Hmm. I noticed that, not all that different from the way a radiator cap locks down. There also looked to be plastic nubs on the reservoir to keep one from overturning the lid.

It is definitely not snug, you can wiggle the lid at least 1/8 of an inch. Doesn't look like it is inexpensive lid to replace with the fluid level sensor built into the lid.

 

You may have to replace the cap seal (#13 in linked illustration) from either being crushed / missing.

I think the lid seals against the inside of the reservoir, not down against the top. You'll be able to spin the top some, without moving the actual seal. If you're talking about that twisting, it's normal.
