Is this a sign of the master brake cylinder going out?
I can press the brake pedal all the way to the carpet with a little force. I'm not completely standing the pedal but just giving it a good smooth push. I plan on changing the brake fluid and hoping this is the cure but I know it is probably not? Any suggestions?
If you don't see any brake fluid leaking around any of the brake line fittings or calipers, then yes, but that is not very common. Most likely you have air in the system (introduced by a leak in the system). Check all the bleeder valves and fittings. If you find it is a leak, once repaired you will need to bleed the system.
it could be just air in the system.. is there fluids at the caliper or around the brake lines/master cyl? i'd try bleeding them first...
make sure you bleed the brakes at each caliper... starting w/ the one farthest from the master cyl.. (passenger rear).. then you can proceed to do the driver rear, passenger front, and lastly the driver front caliper... also make sure your master cyl does not run dry and introduce more air into the system... you could get speed bleeders.. or have a friend pump the brakes and hold it while you open and close the bleeder screw at the caliper and let out all the old fluid and air in the lines... after your done w/ all 4 calipers and all the air and old fluid is out.. the pedal should be firm again... sorry this is a really condensed reply.. as i gotta be sumwhere soon..

Exact same thing was happening with my brakes last year, had the system bled and it didn't solve the problem. In the end it was the master cylinder. On more thing, on really hot days the problem was worse and on one hot day I was stopping slowly and I was almost unable to stop, could of had a bad accident, I was lucky. Get this problem fixed within the week, wait too long and it could end up costing you a lot more. I agree with the above posters though, get the system bled first and see if the problem is solved, and check for leaks anywhere in the break line, if not it could be the master cylinder. Also, while some say that this is a rare problem, several mechanics that I spoke to said it was far more common on honda's and acura's than other cars.
