Default my aluminum welds with tig

sorry for the horrible pic but my camera phone sucks nut sacks.

This was done with a syncrowave 250dx. argon was at 15, 3/32 rod, irradiated tungsten, best guess on the amps while welding was about 140ish from my quick glance at the machine.

I luvvv the foot pedal. I think I will burn the torch control while dancing and chanting later on.

anyway, I cant get true dime stacks and wonder if I need to change up the settings a bit?? I mean, it lays down nicely and seals up good with no burning but they're all different sizes and such. To make it look good I need to grind on them and then paint the plenum.

Oh also, I couldnt figure it out but every now and then after going at it and then pausing to get some more beer I'd have to scratch start to get going again??

what was causing this?? did I contaminate the tungsten just barely but able to get it going again or what??

I agree. Need better pics to determine if it is a decent weld. From the looks, it doesnt look to be the greatest. Im sure if you keep practicing, you will be laying down beautiful beads before you know it. Practice alot before you do your final piece. Get some scrap from a local junkyard and practice!

Aluminum should be welded with hf continuous

yeah sorry about the horrible pic but that's the best my phone can muster. I'm hoping to get a digital camera for christmas though

um, it was a 3.5" tube with 1/4" wall thickness and I just cut a circle out with a hole saw from a plate with about 1/8" thickness and went to welding.

even with the ugliness of the welds it should hold together pretty good under boost. Once I'm better at this I'll probably make another but for right now I'm just trying to get everything made so I can get the car running.

how slow do you guys usually go when you lay down those nice little stacks??

if that's going to be a turbo engine (i'm assuming it is via your sig) why did you go with such a small plenum?

space. it barely clears the brake booster and the back of the 4th runner is right at the back end of the plenum.

It looks like you need to clean the metal better before you weld.

lol, no. Funny thing is that water pump is brand new, I just never painted it, took it right out of the box and tossed it on the engine haha. But anyway, it's just the mock up engine that I've got in the car right now. damn thing has a rod knock like you wont believe so I just pulled the head and set one of my spare volvo heads on it to use so I could cut/measure/weld both my manifolds.

Here's the actual engine I built...

I've still got to finish cleaning the intake manifold before I paint it and then I've got to make the fuel rail, oil lines, etc and I should be ready to drop it in and fire it up finally...1.5 years later

Should have cleaned it before you welded it. Engine looks good, whats the setup?

was in a hurry. the mock engine is back home in charleston at my dad's shop. I was only in town for new years. Had to do what I had to do. So I just cleaned up the areas to be welded and got to work. Even with shaving time by only cleaning it just enough to weld the intake together, I didnt have enough time to finish my power steering pump bracket and some other pieces I wanted to weld. Have to do that next time I'm home which will be march

I've got all the time in the world now to finish cleaning the intake/t-body on my porch here in atlanta.
