Default keep the arospeeds, or buy ground control?

Our 89 CRX Si came with arospeeds and KYB AGX's. They seem ok, but we're turning the car into a dedicated autocross car, so we're gonna get stiffer springs since we don't have to worry about streetability anymore.

The question is... should I buy the ground control coilovers with custom spring rates, or just find some springs in the rates I'm looking for? I don't really know if there's any difference in the assembly itself or not. Is there any reason to go one way or the other? How about weight?

Anyways, any advice would be appreciated.

if your going to be going with high spring rates you will need to have shocks that can handle it.

what rates, and what shocks were you planning on running

I was actually going to start another thread about that... since I'm not sure what rates I can and should run, and there are a number of related questions.

Most likely we're going to have to stick with the AGX's until budget permits the purchase of revalved Konis. I don't know whether AGX's can be revalved or not. What are the stiffest springs that can be run with these? I know it's driver and car dependent, but I need to start somewhere.

I'm also curious to know what the optimal spring rate is assuming I were to get revalved konis.

The CRX has the stock Si front sway bar, and the ST rear (7/8in?). It has a ZC, A/C delete, otherwise relatively stock (running in SM2).

if your really on a budget then you could just buy used springs and save some money. On AGX's i don't think i would push it over 500. But the AGX's are can not be revalved, and they don't offer that much of an adjustment range. Most likely you will end up putting them on stiff and leaving it there.

That said, are there any practical differences between the ground control and arospeeds coilovers, if you don't take the springs into consideration?

Buying the GC's wouldn't be a total loss even if there isn't much of a difference... we can reuse the Arospeed coilovers on a different car. I'm just trying to weigh my options, which learning a bit too.

Well ya the all parts of the GC are top notch quality stuff. I don't know about aero speed stuff though. But as long as the sleeve show no signs of breaking or bending then you should be good.

I just remeber 5 or 6 years ago when i got my first honda, i did it right and droped it on GC. My freinds cheaped out and went with some shitty stuff. Well they hated the ride, and when they spent the money on the GC and we took out the old crap we found colapsed sprnigs and cracked perches.

If it was me, i would wait to do anything untill you have some money to get GC and koni's at the same time. Just make due with what you have for now, and put some money away every month and it wont take to long befor you have enough.

remeber if you cheap out the first time you going to spend more fixing it and buying the right stuff, then if you would have just bought the right stuff in the first place.

the nice thing about autoX is that as long as your out there getting seat time you are learning.

SM2 is a class with some big dogs and were money can really be a big factor in how well you do.

Around here it's usually just supercharged miatas in SM2. The guy that gets FTD every event just drives a simple CRX w/ a normally aspirated ZC and gutted interior (running in DM). The suspension on the car is very well tuned though.

With a little engine work, some suspension modifications, and seat time I'm sure we could keep up with the other cars in SM2 locally.

as long as the arospeed sleeves and collars fit 2.5" ID springs, then just get the spring rates you want.

im not sensing a need to go beyond 500lbs springs anyway for you. so you should be fine with your AGX.

you can find used springs here, start at the end of the thread.
